On Saturday, 200 riders gathered at Mt. Tam’s East Peak to peacefully protest the injunction blocking MMWD’s pilot project for trail access. ??♀? From mountain bikes to gravel bikes, the event brought together Marin’s cycling community to hear powerful speeches from A4B’s Vernon Huffman and environmental advocate Bill Keene, who spoke out against trail access obstruction. ??? “We’ve worked side-by-side with MMWD to prepare these trails responsibly,” Huffman said, addressing the legal barriers blocking fair trail use. To support the cause, riders are encouraged to write letters to organizations and local editors. This year has been pivotal for advocacy as Marin Water evolves its trail use plans. Access4Bikes has played a crucial role in addressing the lack of mountain bike access in the watershed. Here’s a quick overview and an update from the recent Watershed Committee meeting. Background: The push for a renewed Recreation Management Plan (RMP) began when COVID-19 led to a surge in watershed visitation, causing parking, sanitation, and user conflict issues. Under new leadership, the RMP became a priority. With the help of Alta Planning, Marin Water surveyed users, conducted trail counts, and sought community feedback. Update: On June 20, 2024, the Watershed Committee announced trails being considered for pilot programs to allow bikes, including Class 1 eMTBs. Not all trails will pass the screening process, and community compliance with trail use rules is essential for success. The pilot trail list shows staff are listening to the bike community. Next Steps: Trail screening will occur from now until August, with pilot trails announced in September. We could be riding legal singletrack on Mt. Tam this fall! For more details, including a video of the June 20 meeting, visit the Marin Water website. Your support makes this possible. See you at the next Watershed Committee meeting on September 19, 2024, at 9:30am. #MountainBiking #TrailAccess #MtTam #Access4Bikes #MarinCounty #RMP

Over the last fifteen years, outdoor recreation visits have steadily increased on America’s parks and public lands. Over the same time period, real funding for recreation has decreased at land management agencies. This month, Outdoor Alliance and dozens of other outdoor recreation organizations and businesses have joined together to ask Congress to fully fund outdoor recreation budgets at the Forest Service (USFS) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Persistent funding shortfalls affect outdoor recreation experiences and degrade our public lands and waters. Without adequate funding, public lands see greater maintenance issues, trail erosion, trash, and parking problems. Outdoor recreation is also a significant economic driver, contributing $1.1 trillion to the U.S. economy. Investing in outdoor recreation will maintain this economic growth and provide a return to taxpayers. Current budget proposals are inadequate for managing our public lands, which are treasures that we need to steward as a country. https://lnkd.in/g3xERTSQ
