Leveling the literacy playing field for K-8 students living in poverty by providing high quality school libraries.

关于我们

Access Books Bay Area is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based out of the San Francisco Bay Area. Our mission is to level the literacy playing field for K-8 students living in poverty by providing high quality, high-interest, culturally relevant books, and a transformed school library space that invites students to spend time and read. We provide books to low-income schools where at least 90 percent of students live at or below the poverty line. Most students at the schools we serve are children of color and children of immigrants. Since 1999, Access Books in Southern California has donated more than a million books, and each year, approximately 18,000 pre-kindergarten through middle school-aged children participate in our program. Access Books Bay Area is now bringing this important work to the schools of the San Francisco Bay Area. We believe: Literacy is a fundamental right We believe that all children, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, and socioeconomic status, have the right to an educational environment that fosters a love of reading. Study after study has shown that students who read more do better. And not just academically, but in life. This benefit should not be reserved only for the children of the affluent and well-educated. School libraries matter In schools with high quality, well-stocked school libraries, children do better. Yet California provides no dedicated funding for school libraries. This is a crisis in low-income communities especially. We believe that every child has the right to have access to a high quality school library space and collection that will help foster their love of reading. Diversity & representation matter When the books in a school library do not reflect the lives and reality of the students at the school, or are full of outdated information and harmful stereotypes, children are not inspired to read. We believe that every child has the right to see themselves in the books they read.

  • On February 8, our dedicated team of volunteers painted two eye-catching murals inside and outside the Garfield Community School library to breathe new life into the space. They feature popular children's book characters, diverse readers, and Spanish text to resonate with the school's student body — 97% of whom are Hispanic/Latino, 95% of whom are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and 70% of whom are English Language Learners. Huge thank you to Dunn-Edwards Paints for providing us with a wonderful selection of quality paints to bring our vision to life, and our Artistic Director, Olivia Herlihy, the mastermind behind these. And of course, to all our amazing volunteers and supporters — this would not be possible without you! Help us get inclusive, diverse books in the hands of underserved children in the Bay Area. • Alison Guan, one of our Program Directors and a core member of our team, answers our questions in post 2 of our #meettheteam series. ?What do you love most about your work with Access Books Bay Area? ??My favorite is seeing how excited the kids get when they see new books and murals. I also love our volunteers! It feels great to help people get involved in such meaningful work. ?What's a fun fact about you? ??I bake birthday cakes for family members, about eight cakes per year, any flavor requested by the birthday boy or girl. My most recent was Black Forest and my strangest was a Parsnip Cake. ?What's your favorite childhood book? ??I loved the Frog and Toad stories, funny and poignant mini-adventures of two friends. In this ongoing series, get to know the people doing the valuable work behind the scenes. Stay tuned for more! • The Bay Area is marked by significant wealth generated by tech companies, but it also has stark income inequality.?Some regions boast high median household incomes over $150,000,?and these?wealthy areas have well-funded public schools and resources that support children’s educational success. In contrast, low-income areas often have median incomes below $50,000, with residents struggling with high housing costs and basic living expenses. This economic disparity results in challenges like food insecurity, unstable housing, and limited access to quality education, particularly in underfunded schools. Access Books Bay Area aims to address this inequality by providing new books and updated library spaces to public elementary schools serving children living in poverty. Our goal is to ensure that all children in the region, regardless of their economic background, have access to culturally relevant reading materials and a welcoming library space, helping them develop a love for reading, and as a result, increased success in school and beyond. At Access Books Bay Area, we strive to provide children attending under-funded schools increased access to diverse, high-quality books, so they can experience the magic of reading. ?Donate, volunteer or get involved in other ways.
