    We're at Benzinga's Cannabis Capital Conference right now and happy to connect with #cannabis thought-leaders in our network and new. The video below is a coffee chat with Grant Schuster from Accelerant about raising substantial capital very quickly for a Paas (Production-as-a-Service) #automation start-up focused cannabis #preroll #manufacturing and where #prerollmachines are deployed with no CapEx and monetized with a ‘throughput-only’ model based on production. Jim? Congrats it's been an insane couple of months!? I reached out to hundreds of vc's got a lot of ‘pats in the back’ and I could smell a lot of envy (I think a lot of bank banker types wish they were riding with us to be honest) but ultimately i got a lot of very polite ‘passes’ then you pivoted and had some unbelievable success with the raise.? It's fantastic you know bringing on Sean the new CTO you know doubling the manufacturing space in Maryland while doubling the size of the engineering team… I mean things are moving FAST! I don't know how much we're sharing right now but wanted to give the crew a sense of what just happened because it really was pretty stunning the way the financing pulled together so quickly… Grant? It was a transformative year and we have a lot more to go. I've been in cannabis now for a long time and been a part of very, very big raises, and frankly, even earlier on, there's always been a stigma attached to cannabis in general, right? If you're using cannabis. Jim? That's what I was hearing from my crowd. Like everybody was jazzed on the numbers, which are phenomenal, but then they would be like, ‘ooooooh, cannabis…” Grant? Yeah, yeah, I love that. “Oh, I love your business, but I can't do it” Right, I mean, you know, what a ridiculous thing to say Jim? The “PaaS” model, “Production as a Service” (basically SaaS for producing pre-rolls at scale) set a lot of deep hooks before they realized the “pre-roll” meant “cannabis”. Grant? They're like, oh, sorry. Jim? ‘deals up in smoke.’ ~~15 minutes of conversation in video~~ Grant So for debt financing, You've seen a lot of companies do great refinancings at $100, $200 million because that's the check size, a writer, that's the deal that they syndicate. We looked at our current capital stack, the debt equity, we said, you know, what type of instrument do we need to continue to grow at the rate we're growing and do the things to really delight our customers, you know, which is supporting our staff, and we're going to do that, but it came down to what we really needed was a venture debt style. They want to be a part of the deal, but they really want their money back. And so, you know, venture debt can come in various different forms, and, you know, so I'm sure someone will post and say, you don't know what you're talking about, venture debt works like this, and that's okay too, you know, that's the hypercritical nature of, you know, posting anything online.     James M. Pavoldi (@prerollgenius) and the “pre-roll machine” team are at @RevelryNY right now with Lucas Kerr from Torrwood Farm where they’ll be launching the new “Spliff” and “Dash” pre-rolls in Torrwood’s wholesale catalog. After meeting in Las Vegas where Jim was tasked with ‘betting on the right horse for their pre-roll automation partnerships’, Jim came back with 1 sentence: “I’d trust this guy with my kids”. I’d take it a step further and say we'd trust him to get the kids out of a war zone. (Lucas is a former US Army Ranger Captain and Combat Veteran) and the farm has been in his family since they settled the territory 7 generations ago, assuring his commitment to its success and reputation. The "PRO" ("Pre-Roll Operator") pre-roll machine was conceived by CEO Grant Schuster, who left the herb and spice industry to help manage a $40MM manufacturing turnaround for a cannabis MSO, where he immediately saw the opportunity for automation in the pre-roll manufacturing space. With entrepreneur Alan Ellman’s architecture of the “PaaS” (Production-as-a-Service) concept, he and “Billion Bullet Bob” (My pneumonic for him when we first met in Missouri based on his experience manufacturing ammo at scale), built the first pre-roll machine that they they could deploy as a ‘throughput-only service’ charging only? for the pre-rolls produced, instead of trying to sell it as a million-dollar system... No stranger to hyper-growth, Jim is focused on converting 100 seasoned CFO’s to the No CapEX PaaS model. With a “find gold together or eat our mules” attitude that focus is paying off having converted 52 already. Not an easy task, as sometimes ‘seasoned’ is synonymous with ‘ornery’ but some of those CFO's that literally told him “we’ll never do this” have since become Accelerant’s most aggressive partners as they scale with machines in multiple facilities and with single operators running 2-3 machines simultaneously (Accelerant pre-roll machines can make between 1,500 and 3,000 pre-rolls per hour).. With a recent [redacted]-figure capital raise completed with lightning speed (all from an email sent on the 4th of July!), the crew is poised to increase production of new #prerollmachines and help even more #cannabis #cultivators and #processors elevate their #preroll game to meet demand at scale with proven and consistent product quality. The team has doubled the size of it’s manufacturing facility in Maryland and brought in Sean Dotson as CTO, Kevin Fernandes as CFO, with even more growth planned for the engineering and success teams that have also recently doubled in size.
