Academic entrepreneurs work to move ideas from initial research to practical implementation.
关于我们
The recent momentum and urgency around translating science and technology into health innovation is inspiring. It’s transformative too, as the rapidly-evolving world of health innovation has given rise to a new breed of academic – the academic entrepreneur – who works to move ideas from initial research to practical implementation. The work of these individuals is crucial to realizing the potential of investments in better care. Thus, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Research Institute partnered with the University of Pennsylvania’s (Penn) Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT) to seed fund Academic Entrepreneurship for Medical and Health Scientists, a grassroots effort of editors, subject matter experts, and translational research students to create a free Open Education Resource. It has become a central repository for information and wisdom relevant to health innovation; a place to house and explore the evolving knowledge base around translating evidence into impact. Academic entrepreneurs are busy and bright and have limited time to learn entrepreneurship. Thus, the chapters, interactive resources—as well as the courses and classes that have spun out from this e-book-- are intended as an efficient and state-of-the-art source of guidance. With carefully curated collections as a strong foundation, the reader has quick introductions to key topics in academic entrepreneurship and innovations with classes and courses for those who wish to go further. This e-book is a repository of tools, advice, and best practices that establishes a foundation for academic researchers and innovators wherever they may reside.

Penn Health-Tech’s Accelerator Boot Camp is Underway! Last month, we kicked off our Health-Tech’s Accelerator Boot Camp, an invite-only, strategic innovation education program designed to teach the basics of commercialization of technologies developed in academic settings. The Boot Camp is open to teams going through our Accelerator application process and supports the development of a high-quality translational proposal and pitch for funding consideration by PHT and other future partners. Last Wednesday, we had the honor of hosting our first guest speaker, Stacey Youcis, VP of Supply Chain for the University of Pennsylvania Health System, who shared invaluable insights on value analysis—a critical component in understanding how healthcare systems evaluate and adopt new technologies. We’re excited for the weeks ahead as our teams continue to refine their commercialization strategies with the guidance of industry experts.

New research published in the journal Molecular Therapy Nucleic Acids and funded by our Cell and Gene Therapy Collaborative demonstrates how a novel in vivo gene therapy could hold promise for patients with Fanconi anemia (FA). Individuals with FA are unable to create healthy blood cells in the bone marrow. In the pre-clinical study, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia researchers successfully used in vivo lipid nanoparticles, a therapeutic cargo delivery system, to reach key areas in the bone marrow and temporarily restore critical stem cell functions. More than 100,000 people in the US are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, and there aren’t enough donors to meet those needs. Each day, 16 people die waiting for a transplant. ? Through a joint effort with Donate Life America, patients will be able to easily register as organ, eye, and tissue donors through MyChart, as well as choose whether to donate for research and education in addition to transplant purposes. Each organ donor can save up to 8 lives and enhance many more, and registering to be a donor is a great way to express your wishes and commitment to organ donation. ? This feature will be available in the coming months. If you’re an Epic community member, you can reach out to your Epic representative to learn more.
