We gave a seed grant last year to?Chicago Says Welcome, who recognized early on that the scarcity mindset triggered by the migrants being bused to their city could end up dividing Chicagoans. To fight back against narratives pitting marginalized groups against each other, they engaged the Chicago poet laureate and ran?this beautiful ad. As the poet says, we can’t discount people’s realities, but we are stronger together than we are apart. We are proud to have been a small part of this effort.

We just hosted a learning trip to the border in El Paso—our first unique, immersive engagement experience for funders to get proximate to the issue of immigration. Immigration has an outsize impact on our politics, economy, and everyday life. Yet currently, less than 1% of philanthropic funding goes to immigration. We’re here to disrupt this trend. And that requires new champions, new partners, and a bigger table. We want to thank everyone who joined us on our inaugural trip for philanthropy. We hope you came away feeling empowered to advance solutions that protect and expand immigrants’ rights, and strengthen our communities We are also so grateful to the many local experts in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, who met with us and shared their diverse perspectives and insights on the “real story” behind the newspaper headlines. We are so glad to see Inside Philanthropy shining a light on the need for more philanthropic investment to protect immigrant workers.?We're proud to?be supporting many groups across the country working to implement the Deferred Action for Labor Enforcement program (DALE), which provides temporary work authorization and protection against deportation to immigrant workers who are whistleblowers?on labor violations.? As the article notes, "DALE has the potential to transform the highly dangerous and exploitative industries that rely on immigrant workers. It is a hugely appealing opportunity for undocumented workers — a powerful incentive to step forward and confront the boss. It could greatly expand worker organizing, to the benefit of workers across the country. The mechanisms to scale DALE organizing are in place, but they won’t fulfill their potential without a greater investment from philanthropy." #immigrantjustice #philanthropy
