I founded, own, and operate, a business that is so much more than simply selling coffee. I created a vehicle that allows me to learn more about history, the world, and our collective future. I developed a brand that continues to educate and inspire generations young and old to understand more about themselves as well. Historically Black fruits, such as coffee, prove that Africa is the origin of Earth’s most popular products. There are riches in our heritage, and our ancestral intelligence provides us everything we need to produce, protect, and preserve our contributions to mankind. When God calls you to your mission, it’s your duty to answer and execute. The war is ongoing, and we must fight until victory is won. Garry Johnson III is the Founder and Executive Director of First Founders Inc., an organization dedicated to lowering the barriers to entry for underrepresented entrepreneurs. Black women deserve better. Entrepreneurship is about solving problems, and Fearless Fund is a shining example of exactly that. In a world where Black women are amongst the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs, yet they receive the least amount of venture funding, the Fearless Fund team decided to do something about it. They've established their own venture capital fund to provide equity investments, in addition to providing non-dilutive grant funding to women of color entrepreneurs through their nonprofit arm foundation. Despite their efforts to contribute to a more just and equitable innovation ecosystem, their work has been attacked through legal action and they've been blocked by a federal appeals court stopping them from issuing grants to women business owners in need. Some view Fearless Fund's work as reverse discrimination, whatever that is, while we know the real discrimination is evident the economic redlining that segregates the fundraising landscape. I've been passionate about supporting Black women entrepreneurs since I first participated in a startup accelerator program back in 2018. I'll continue to advocate, educate, and empower others to speak truth to power while working collectively to build a more equitable startup ecosystem for all. According to The Brookings Institution, between 2019 and 2022 the racial wealth gap increased by $49,950—adding up to a total difference of $240,120 in wealth between the median white household and the median Black household. In 2021, Black-founded startups received 1.4% of all U.S. venture funding. In 2022, it was 1.1%. The decline in capital to Black-founded companies greatly outpaces the overall decline in startup funding. While total venture dollars in the U.S. fell 37% last year, funding to Black-founded startups dropped a staggering 71%, according to Crunchbase data.
