Last week, a plane traveling from Wichita, KS, to Washington, DC, collided with a military helicopter, sending both into the Potomac River. All 67 passengers perished in this tragic accident. ? We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this heartbreaking tragedy. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this devastating loss. ? In his press conference, the President announced that he was mobilizing an investigation and expressed the opinion that his predecessors had lowered the standards for air traffic controllers through diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He alluded that the FAA’s recruitment and hiring policy, which includes a focus on hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities, may have been a factor in the crash. President Trump also issued a memo ordering an immediate assessment of aviation safety, which confirmed his position that recruiting individuals with "severe intellectual" disabilities to work at the FAA was "dangerous." ? We are alarmed by the connection drawn between disability employment and this tragedy. It is unclear whether this signals broader rollbacks of DEI programs in the federal government.
