Monday mornings Do you dread getting back into the swing of things on Mondays, or do you face it head-on, ready to conquer the week? Mondays often set the tone for the rest of the week, so make sure to set it off right! Especially on the first Monday after a time change, we tend to use excuses to hit the snooze button and not show up with the energy we need. Start setting the pace on Monday morning and maintain that momentum throughout the week!

Attitudes: The Key to Growth Attitudes are the #1 indicator of an individual’s potential for growth. Not every day is glamorous with big equipment and photo-worthy jobs. Sometimes, you have to hold the door while your buddy relocates the job site phone booth. I often speak with people who want to join our team, and I make sure to emphasize the importance of good attitudes. Simply put, a good attitude is a mindset of willingness. It’s the willingness to grab a shovel, take time to teach, give a new guy seat time, or stay late on the site. Good attitudes always outshine skill sets.

Friday Wins With a full week approaching the rearview, it’s important to take time to reflect on the wins of the week. Where did we succeed and where can we improve next week? Celebrate wins and brainstorm improvements together as a team. We’re only as good as our collective efforts and desire for improvement.

How do you begin? Morning routines are a comforting space we all navigate. Whether it’s the routine before leaving home or the routine when you arrive at the office, there’s a standardized process to what you do. Job sites should be no exception. Establishing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for initiating and concluding our daily routines provides our crews with a sense of comfort and confidence.

How are all the people at Abernethy Contracting so shredded? This gym is in their office! The other week when we were there, we used it for the morning PT routine that is a signature of the Ground Crew peer group meetings. Not mandatory, but it’s an option ?? Hearing Chad talk about why they built the gym and how some of their folks have started using it at lunch break or after work just fires me up so much. It’s so encouraging to see companies taking care of people beyond the scope of their job description. Health, finances, mental fitness, personal discipline and high standards, and even spiritual care are all well beyond what might have been in the job posting, but it’s how these great companies are operating. Take care of the people and they’ll take care of the profit.

It was a honor to host such an impressive group of hungry entrepreneurs! Doors are always open!
The kick-off meeting for Ground Crew 006 is a wrap ?? Two days of awesome, practical, insightful conversation with a really, really good group of folks. Here’s a quick overview of our time together: - 7 contractors from across the country flew to Charlotte for two days - Day 1: Morning PT, introductions, and a few site visits with Abernethy Contracting - Afternoon discussion reviewing Carl Pietila’s outfit, Highland Services. We talked about their estimating, project management, and financials - Steak dinner and awesome conversations with the group - Day 2: Morning PT and some lessons learned from the group mentor, Chad Abernethy - Discussions on strategic planning, estimating, project start up and management, hiring and keeping people, and work-life balance as an owner - Ended with written action items with deadlines I’m so impressed with the quality of conversation, but after thinking through it, I really shouldn’t be surprised. The Ground Crew has a very simple bar that applicants have to clear: They need to be Humble and Hungry. Humble enough to recognize that they don’t know it all. There’s always more to learn and improve on. Hungry enough to be ready to change when presented with new ideas and information. They have to take action in order to prove that they’ve learned. This remains a solid filter for the Ground Crew, and even after putting a bunch of groups together, I have yet to find a dud. I couldn’t be more stoked about the future of these companies if I tried to be. Very grateful for Abernethy’s over-the-top hosting and for every one of these guys for showing up! Appreciate you guys Dustin Kauffman, David Megorden, Trent Grassbaugh, Aaron and Kendra Bower, Carl Pietila, Jeremy Winter, Phil, and Tyler!

We’re excited to host this awesome group of change makers!
It’s been a long time coming but I finally got to tour the Abernethy Contracting global headquarters. Growing civil contractors from around the country flew in tonight and we’ll be here at the Abernethy facility for the next couple of days. This company is fixing to become an icon in the industry for how they deal with people. I’m grateful to get to work with Chad Abernethy to host this peer group. I tell you, it’s all gas and no brakes during these meetings. Group workout starts at 6:00am and dinner will finish around 9:00pm tomorrow. Then we’ll do it again Thursday. But the level of conversation is so rich, man. Even the two hour dinner at Chipotle tonight was fantastic. I love every minute of it. Fortunately, my man Justin Gillis came down to help capture some of the action so we can show you more soon. Have a great rest of your week ??

With the changing seasons comes a mix of emotions. The cold and darkness can be overwhelming, and the wet ground seems like it'll never see the sun again. Long days are few and far between, and getting out of bed can feel like a monumental task. Yet, it's in these moments that you discover your inner strength and perseverance. We strive to make the most of every day and be a force for good. Keep pulling because sunny days are coming!
