Lawyers risk their lives every day to defend the truth and protect victims of the most egregious #humanrights violations. Monday marked International Right to Truth Day, which honors the memory of victims of gross and systematic human rights violations and shines a light on the importance of the right to truth, including those who devote their lives to this very work. In many corners of the world, the ABA's Center for Global Programs (CGP) has provided critical support to lawyers working on human rights cases. Our programs work to protect the most vulnerable from gross human rights violations, but the majority of those programs had to abruptly stop due to the US foreign assistance freeze. For example, in #Guatemala, ABA CGP was preparing to offer legal and psychosocial support to the Mujeres Achí (Achí Women), a group of ethnic-minority women who suffered high rates of #sexualviolence at the hands of the Guatemalan Government during the country’s 36-year internal armed conflict. Our technical assistance was expected to benefit 22 individuals in the Mujeres Achí case, however, due to the aid freeze, ABA CGP was forced to abruptly stop support. This situation not only puts lawyers and civil society organizations working on these cases at risk but detrimentally impacts the victims and survivors.
