Marketing Student at University of Miami Herbert Business School

As the semester comes to a close and I prepare for my study abroad in London, I want to reflect on my incredible journey as part of the Asian American Students Association at the University of Miami (AASA) executive board. ? AASA was the very first organization I joined as a freshman stepping onto campus, and applying to be one of the three Freshman Liaisons was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Serving in that role alongside Gabriel Huang and Taylor Lin shaped my college experience, and I’m grateful for the lifelong connections I’ve built through this amazing community. ? From starting as a Freshman Liaison to becoming the Communications Chair, and ultimately creating the role of Marketing Director while establishing and leading AASA’s first Marketing Committee, my time with this organization has been a highlight of my years so far at the University of Miami. These accomplishments have all been possible because of the unwavering support and guidance from the current and past EBoard members I’ve had the privilege of working with. AASA has helped me grow not just as a leader but as a person, fostering a deeper understanding of collaboration, creativity, and cultural appreciation. ? As I look to the future, I’m so excited to pass the torch to Natalie Wu and Makena Wong who will undoubtedly do amazing things as Marketing Director and the newly established Creative Director role. I can’t wait to see all they accomplish for AASA and beyond!

  • A huge congratulations to Matisohn Huynh and Cedric Fine on their recent initiation into Kappa Theta Pi - Sigma Chapter ! We’re so proud of our members and all they have accomplished individually, and within their roles in the Asian American Students Association. Matisohn Huynh is a sophomore majoring in Electrical Engineering, and a member of the AASA Marketing Committee. Originally from San Diego, California, she recently transferred to UMiami to pursue her passion for engineering and has already made an impact on her community. As an integral member of the Marketing Committee, Matisohn assists in promoting events and creating content for AASA. Her creativity and organizational skills have been a valuable asset to the marketing team. Beyond her role in AASA, Matisohn has worked as an undergraduate research intern, where she evaluated deep learning models used for liver lesion segmentation, utilizing image enhancement techniques to improve model accuracy and reliability. Cedric Fine, a freshman majoring in Computer Engineering, holds the position of Freshman Liaison. While Cedric has always had an interest in computer science, he chose his major due to his desire to challenge himself. In his role as Freshman Liaison, Cedric plays a key part in assisting the AASA executive board, helping to ensure that events are well-coordinated and impactful for all. He joined Kappa Theta Pi in order to surround himself amongst a community of like-minded individuals, believing that that is what provides the perfect environment to grow. Growing up in Manhattan, New York, Cedric has also contributed to his community through his work with Citizens’ Committee for Children, a lobbying group in Albany advocating for children safety and well-being. We are so proud of both Matisohn and Cedric’s accomplishments and are excited to see them continue to grow, both academically and professionally. We look forward to their continued contributions to the AASA community and beyond!

Today we spotlight Gabriel Huang, Project Manager of Bonsai’s Biology project. The team, in collaboration with multiple labs at the The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, is tasked with constructing machine learning cell-to-cell communication models to analyze gene expression in damaged central nervous system tissue. Previously, Gabriel was an analyst in the computational neuroscience division, developing an AI tool to quantify dendritic spine morphology, a crucial step in analyzing neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Reflecting on his time in Bonsai, Gabriel shared, “I love how Bonsai values the qualities I admire most in people: open-mindedness, curiosity, and creativity.” Gabriel has always been passionate about data science, but it was while he was working in the UM Sport Science department that he developed an interest in the intersection between data science and health research. Using computational methods to help UM athletes avoid deterioration and injuries, he realized the potential of applying innovative data science to real-world health problems. Currently, he is a data scientist for defense contractor Tiger Tech Solutions, helping to develop medical wearables used by clients including the US Department of Defense, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and UM Athletics. He builds data software to analyze biometric data and cognitive load of military personnel and high-level athletes. In parallel, he conducts research at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, focusing on structural bioinformatics modeling using neural networks. Passionate about the AAPI community, Gabriel currently serves as the President of the Asian American Students Association at the University of Miami.

  • Internship Spotlight! Meet Chloe Soriano, a 4th year student currently pursuing a 5-year program to earn her Undergraduate and Masters degrees in Biomedical Engineering. On track to graduate with a dual degree, Chloe aspires to go into the medical device industry, and particularly aims to focus on post market analysis and new product development. This summer, she interned with Centella, a medical imaging company in Miami. As a Field Engineering Intern, Chloe’s responsibilities included troubleshooting and maintaining high functionality of multiple medical imaging systems made by Siemens Healthineers. She shares her personal experience saying, “I rotated every two weeks within the ten week program to different imaging modalities such as X-ray, MRI, CT, Angiography, and PET.
