This #BlackHistoryMonth, AAOS proudly recognizes the extraordinary contributions of Black orthopaedic pioneers who have shaped our field and inspired future generations. ? Dr. E. Anthony Rankin – The first African American president of AAOS (2008), whose leadership and dedication advanced the profession. Dr. Rankin was also honored with the AAOS Diversity Award (2016) and has the E. Anthony Rankin Scholarship Program, administered by the SOCIETY OF MILITARY ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEONS, named after him. ?Dr. Robert Gladden – A trailblazer as the first African American to be certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (1949) and to be elected Fellow of the AAOS (1949) and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (1951). Dr. Gladden is also the namesake of the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society ?Dr. Claudia Thomas – Breaking barriers as the first African American and female to be admitted to the Yale Medical Program in Orthopaedics. She was the first African American female orthopaedic surgeon certified by the ABOS (1982) and was honored with the AAOS Diversity Award (2008), paving the way for women of color in orthopaedics. ?Dr. Richard Grant – Making history as the first African American president of ABOS. Dr. Grant championed excellence in the field by co-founding the Black Pre-Medical Society at Stanford University (1971), accepting more female residents to the orthopaedic residency program at Howard University than any other program in the country as their chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery (1988-2001) and receiving the AAOS Diversity Award (2017). We celebrate these and many more achievements and the lasting impact they have had on the orthopaedic community. Their legacy continues to inspire diversity, innovation, and excellence in musculoskeletal care. #WeAreAllOrtho
