While artificial intelligence gets lots of “gee whiz” attention, can it be used to disrupt fundamental aspects of the health care system for the betterment of all? Microsoft exec James Weinstein, DO, in the lead-up to his talk at Learn Serve Lead 2024: The AAMC Annual Conference, thinks so. In a new Q&A with AAMCNews, he discusses how AI can expand access to care – and even prevent disease. By analyzing data from disconnected information silos — like someone’s medical conditions, genetics, health behaviors, and home environments — AI could proactively improve a person’s health before diseases fully manifest themselves. “We haven’t had so much upstream predictive capability before,” he says. That raises concerns about privacy. How will each person’s data be used and protected? Does Weinstein’s pitch for giving patients “informed choice” about the use of their data rather than the traditional “informed consent” allay those concerns? https://ow.ly/NXul50TLOBJ

This #IndigenousPeoplesDay, I want to share the work of We Are Healers, a non-profit working to increase the number of Native American health professionals, who are still vastly underrepresented in medicine. This work is crucial in creating a health care system that reflects the diversity of our nation. Improving Native American representation in medicine helps foster culturally competent care, addresses health disparities, and builds trust within communities.?https://lnkd.in/gFtRQcjT?

"Life could not exist without proteins. That we can now predict protein structures and design our own proteins confers the greatest benefit to humankind." David Baker of UW School of Medicine succeeded with the almost impossible feat of building entirely new kinds of proteins, which can be used as pharmaceuticals, vaccines and more. The research conducted today at AAMC member institutions lead to tomorrow's breakthroughs. Congratulations, David, on being awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry! https://ow.ly/irtT50TIhhF

“You’re never really the same.” That’s one of the primary takeaways from Barbara Blok, MD, of University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, who treated victims of the mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado in 2012. “It’s part of who I am now.” Mass shootings devastate us all, including the health professionals who spring into action to save the victims. “I am absolutely a different person than before I walked into that school. To some degree I might be better. I have become a differently empathetic and compassionate individual,” says Richard Kamin, MD, of UConn Health, who responded to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012. AAMCNews talked to six extraordinary doctors about how those experiences affected them — in the moment of crisis, in the aftermath, and for the rest of their lives.
