关于我们

The African-American Lawyers Section (“AALS”) was founded in 1992 with the mission of promoting the objectives of the State Bar of Texas as they relate to African-American lawyers. The vision has expanded for many years and today we are proud to assist local bars in providing legal education and services to their communities. In the last six years, AALS has proudly sponsored scholarships for students ranging from high school to law school, maintained connections with Texas attorneys across the state and nationwide, and hosted an annual Texas African-American Lawyers Diversity Summit.

  • It has been a week and we are still full from the experiences at Law Day 2024, co-sponsored by J. L. Turner Legal Association and the African-American Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas. During this mutually beneficial day, multiple attorneys volunteered their time to speak to students about their path to The Law. For many students, this was a rare opportunity to have a personal conversation with an attorney about that student's goals, plans, and unknowns. We are grateful to Kimberly Godsey for her esteemed leadership of this initiative year after year, and to every attorney from both organizations who volunteered their time to increase the flow of people from all avenues in our society, to join our esteemed profession. Stay tuned for information on how YOU can be a part of Law Week 2025!

  • ****WE NEED YOU!**** As a SOLO ATTORNEY, you are the Managing Partner, the Associate, the Paralegal, the Legal Assistant (and some days the Environmental Services Technician, the Bookeeper, and the Receptionist). It's rewarding.... but it can be taxing. Especially when it can feel that your expertise, your experiences, your wisdom, and your know-how is not rewarded by the standards of some. But honestly, that's not why you do it, is it? You are a solo attorney, so you can help your clients on your own terms, at your pace, in the way you see best. Share the wealth of that with future attorneys at the upcoming LAW DAY event. A SINGLE HOUR of your time could shift the career of a student in immeasurable ways. Sponsored by the African-American Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas and the J. L. Turner Legal Association, this event needs a SOLO ATTORNEY to volunteer an hour of their time to share their advice and experiences with students. The sign up link is in the comments or see the QR code below. To whom much is given, much is required. You've arrived - now it's time to help those who desire to be where you are.

  • If you didn't grow up with attorneys in your circle, and perhaps didn't take the work-in-a-law-firm approach prior to law school, you may recall a time where you would have done anything to have a conversation with an attorney. Especially one that you could relate to. Now, YOU'RE the attorney. And there are law students, college pre-law students, and not-sure-what-I-want-to-do-but-being-a-lawyer sounds-cool students who would do anything to have a conversation with you. Learn from you. Please volunteer an hour of your time to make an impact that could change a life. Sign up link: https://lnkd.in/g7FvakT5

  • Today is THE DAY! Come join the African-American Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas at our DFW Meet & Greet event, starting at 5:30 p.m. The number ONE reason your face should ABSOLUTELY be in the place? WHY should you fight traffic, after a long day, to come to this event, and talk to people you may not know or that you haven't seen in forever? Reason # 1: Because you can't critique what you didn't contribute to, nor can you authentically opine on what you don't observe. We need to hear feedback on what you loved or what we can do better, but it's hard to hear it if you didn't attend the event. For this reason, and all the ones we have shared previously, (scroll back to see the other reasons if you've missed them), we look forward to seeing you this evening on the Rooftop!

  • As you plan your week, make sure that the DFW networking event hosted by the African-American Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas is part of your plan! Reason # 2 that you ABSOLUTELY should attend this promising event: You know what's been, but you don't know what shall be. That is, you don't know what, or who, you'll need before the year is out. Whether you're currently employed, self employed, owner of a multi million dollar firm, or in between opportunities to allow the legal market to experience your brilliance, you never know who might be a part of your next chapter. Come expand your network- and your possibilities- this Tuesday, Oct. 29th. REGISTER HERE: https://lnkd.in/gwinRWaj

  • (Unconventional) Reason # 3 you should be at the DFW Meet & Greet of the African-American Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas this coming Tuesday. . . Usually we take this time to convince you of why you should attend our event. We extol the benefits of the organization and promote how rewarding the event will be. And it will be. Our organization is, in fact, a pivotal part of the successful career of the Texas African American Lawyer. But today's reason won't focus on that. Yes, you'll get a lot out of this event if you attend. But Reason # 3 is.....there are people at this event that will need to know what YOU know. To meet YOU. To be inspired by YOU. To make connections with YOU. In short, Reason # 3 is you've been given so much, it is unfair not to share some of it. To whom much is given, much is required. You're required to be there because you've been given so much. You may be at a point at your career at which you don't need to network to get business. You know how to handle almost every type of case in your practice area. But it wasn't always that way. There was a point in your career you would have done almost anything to meet someone who knows what you know and would be willing to share. Come to the event. Meet someone who you didn't know and who may not know you. Share. Make yourself a resource. Be for them what you wish you had earlier in your career. Your legacy will not only be about cases - it will be measured by people. Registration link is in the comments. See you Tuesday!

  • We're serious! VERY SERIOUS. We absolutely want to chat with you, learn from you, network with you, and unwind a bit..... with YOU. This coming Tuesday, October 29th, 2024, starting at 5:30 p.m., the African-American Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas will host a complimentary networking event at Kanvas Sports & Social in Dallas. We would love to see you. Reason # 4: There's immense benefit in seeing other successful people do what you do, but in a different way. Yes, you're great at what you do, but wouldn't it be great to meet other attorneys, who may share some of your experiences and perspectives, who are also phenomenal in your practice area, but do things a bit differently? Or maybe being able to establish a referral circle with business, family, trademark, or criminal attorneys might be beneficial. It's all possible. But you have to be there to make it happen. Register HERE: https://lnkd.in/gwinRWaj

  • The African-American Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas is looking forward to networking with YOU! (Registration link for this complimentary event is below.) OPEN to all of our members as well as our future members, including law students and attorney aspirants, you are invited to enjoy professional conversation and light fare in a beautiful atmosphere as you get to know your colleagues. As we count down the days to this "work and play" event, we will share some of the reasons why networking, particularly at this event, is pivotal for your career, your bottom line, and your psyche. REASON # 5: Because your career path is not just determined by WHAT you know - it's also determined by WHO you know... and WHO KNOWS YOU! Register HERE: //lnkd.in/gwinRWaj

  • We are nearing the end of a challenging work week. And we know what you're thinking: Wouldn't it be great to be able to relax, have some great conversation with other interesting and experienced attorneys, and network? ?? But wait, you really should be diligent about getting those CLE hours in and not waiting until the last minute. ?? And. . . you have to catch up on your work on your strategic plan - for your individual legal career or for your law firm business. ?? We have a single event at which you can do ALL of the above! ?? The Ninth Annual African American Lawyers Section (AALS) Summit & Awards Luncheon is this Saturday, May 18th, 2024. Admission is complimentary for members and low cost for non-members (although we'd really LOVE for you to become a member!) and offers an incomparable wealth of CLE panel discussions, an awards luncheon, and a post event networking social. Register for this event today! https://lnkd.in/gi88623R #AfricanAmericanLawyers #AwardsLuncheon #TexasLawyers #StateBarofTexas

  • Could I? I couldn't! Well, maybe I could. But . . . I'm too (insert perfectly valid but probably untrue reason here). Whatever the reason or rationale, it might be helpful to hear from attorneys who have had those SAME reasons (and probably some others you didn't even think of!) before they went to law school and went anyway. Leverage their experiences to help you design your path of transition to a legal career as an attorney. Hope to see you this Friday!
