From Paul Miller, AAHAM's Legislative Advocacy Partner In times of uncertainty, your voice is more important than ever. Advocacy is not just about speaking up—it’s about being heard. And one of the most effective ways to amplify your voice is by participating in your professional association’s fly-in. These events give your industry or profession a seat at the table, ensuring decision-makers in Washington understand the real-world impact of their policies. There’s an old saying: "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." The same applies to advocacy. If you don’t make your concerns known, policymakers will assume there’s no issue. But making noise just for the sake of it is not enough. Effective advocacy requires a well-thought-out plan—before, during, and after your fly-in. A successful fly-in isn't just about showing up; it's about being strategic. Before you set foot on Capitol Hill, you need a pre-game plan: Who are you meeting with? What are your key messages? What data supports your argument? On game day, delivering your message clearly and concisely is critical. And once the meetings are over, the post-game follow-up is just as important—thanking legislators and their staff, providing additional information, and keeping the dialogue going. Washington needs to hear from you. Your members of Congress want to know how policies impact their constituents. There is too much at stake to sit on the sidelines. But advocacy isn’t just about participation—it’s about results. By being strategic and intentional, your voice can influence real change. In the end, “We the People” only means something if you get involved in a productive way.
