Everyone in this iconic photograph held a degree in sociology.?Jesse Jackson, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Ralph Abernathy (l-r) were photographed together on the balcony of Memphis’ Lorraine Motel on April 3, 1968. King delivered his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech that evening in support of city sanitation workers protesting low pay and poor working conditions.?He was assassinated while on the same balcony the following day.

Browne-Marshall is the author of "She Took Justice:?The Black Woman, Law, and Power," "Race, Law, and American Society: 1607 to Present," "The Voting Rights War," "The Constitution: Major Cases and Conflicts" and "The Black Woman: 400 Years of Perseverance." Always the writer, Gloria's essays have appeared in the Milwaukee Courier, TIME.com, CNN.com, NBC.com and her poem Mother Mythic is in Penumbra and "white privilege" is in Esthetic Apostle Journal. Her articles appear in several journals and online. Gloria is a playwright with seven produced plays and looks forward to the production of her play that asks "who owns American history?" She is working on a documentary based on travels to Angola, a nonfiction book on uprisings, and her debut novel. Gloria is a playwright?with seven stage-plays, including "SHOT: Caught a Soul"?published by TRW, "My Juilliard," "Killing Me Softly," "Waverly Place," "Crossroad" asks who owns the American Dream, and "Dreams of Emmett Till" takes the murder of Till into the 21st century. She attended the Sarah Lawrence MFA playwrights program. Gloria is a tenured Professor of Constitutional Law at John Jay College (CUNY). She also taught in the Africana Studies Program at Vassar College. Prior to academia, Gloria litigated cases for the Southern Poverty Law Center, Community Legal Services, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Inc. She is the recipient of many awards including an IOP Harvard Kennedy School Fellowship, Pulitzer Center grant, Wiley College Woman of Excellence Award, NAACP Service Award, Emerging Screenwriter Award, (many film festival awards) and Frederick Lewis Allen Fellowship. Gloria J. Browne-Marshall has appeared in several documentary films, including "Let The World See" on Mamie and Emmett Till, "Harriet Tubman: Visions of Freedom" and "Becoming Frederick Douglass." She speaks nationally and internationally about her books and issues of social justice. ? Since each paper session will be about an hour, we anticipate up to three presenters per session (15 minutes each) to ensure adequate time for discussion. You may recruit your own group of three or request to be matched with other paper abstract presenters.? Poster Overviews?will be like Paper sessions, except they include briefly presenting a Poster instead of a paper. Again, we anticipate up to three presenters per session to ensure adequate time for discussion. You may recruit your own group of three presenters or request that we match you with other Poster presenters. Your poster must be electronic so that it can be shared via a screen or link that can be clicked on and viewed through a digital device. Your poster may also be an info-graphic, sociologically inspired digital art piece, other visually creative design or video, or a “three minute thesis” presentation. The Poster Overviews are an important opportunity for researchers, innovators, and creatives at all career stages to present and discuss their work and sociological perspective with others. Be as creative as you want to be! Finally, Workshops?tend to include teaching a skill, process, or a “how to”. Workshops may be presented by solo or multiple presenters. Share your wisdom with us!
