At a recent Science Philanthropy Alliance event, Alliance partners had the opportunity to hear directly from?Sudip Parikh, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), about the Vision for American Science & Technology (VAST). ? In this clip,?Sudip?explains why #VAST is urgently needed right now and how a wide-ranging group of leaders—including Alliance President France Córdova—shaped its development. As we continue to help Alliance partners navigate a shifting landscape for science funding, we are convening leaders in philanthropy, academia, and policy to explore key challenges and opportunities. Through these ongoing discussions, we are creating space for partners to share insights, coordinate efforts, and shape the future of discovery science, ensuring philanthropy remains an informed and effective driver of scientific progress. Join us in congratulating the new 2024 AAAS Fellows class! This distinction is among the highest in the scientific community and honors scientists, engineers, and innovators whose efforts on behalf of science and its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished. “This year’s class of Fellows are the embodiment of scientific excellence and service to our communities,” said AAAS CEO Sudip Parikh. “At a time when the future of the scientific enterprise in the U.S. and around the world is uncertain, their work demonstrates the value of sustained investment in science and engineering.” https://lnkd.in/ejRxn9VY??

"AI must be used as a tool to overcome social, environmental, and economic challenges, and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals," said Luciana Santos, Brazil’s Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovation in a conversation for Science & Diplomacy. This conversation is the first in the AAAS Center for Science Diplomacy and IAI Science Diplomacy Center's new Minister Conversation Series. Here, Minister Santos discusses Brazil’s National Strategy for STI and the country’s AI plan, the Ministry’s initiatives to address inequalities in science, and much more. Communications Director, Science family journals

Spent several days in Tokyo & Kyoto. The people here are always so warm. We had fantastic conversations on researcher-first public access policies, strategies for building trust in science, approaches for translating curiosity-driven research into society-serving applications, and science in America right now. I loved meeting early-career researchers, veteran researchers, Japanese funders, press officers, and folks working on academia-industry collaboration. Thanks to all who said "hello." Takeaways I'm bringing home include: ? It's important to articulate that public access policies should consider not just the reader, but also the researcher. ? Curiosity-driven research -- where there's less pressure to identify a *particular* outcome -- may be less likely to lead to research misconduct. ? When scientists in a country create "critical seeds" of innovation, those seeds can inspire development of important new disciplines at home and abroad in ways that persist even as funding declines. Focus on creating critical seeds! ? Scientists want peer review to be faster. One way to facilitate this could be for different disciplines to come together and reconsider what they ask of each other (i.e., more experiments) in the peer review they conduct. ? People the world over still struggle with work-life balance.
