Yesterday was an important day for Area Agencies on Aging as more than 400 people gathered on the capitol lawn to advocate for increased funding for programs that support older adults remaining independent in their homes. We are asking legislators to support a $3 million increase in the Ombudsman staffing across the state, raise the MI Choice asset limit, continue funding for caregiver supports, and support the Silver Key Coalition by providing an additional $7 million in non-Medicaid home and community-based services and $1 million in additional nutritional funding. #michiganlegislature

This week is SENIOR ACTION WEEK! First Up: We are urging legislators to support a $3 million increase in funding for the work of Long-Term Care Ombudsman. Right now we have 1 ombudsman for every 5177 beds in the state! This is an unacceptable ratio. The recommended ratio is 1:2000.

Today 4AM had the pleasure of giving testimony before the House Appropriations Committee as we seek support for the state ombudsman program, caregiver supports, and MI Choice Waiver. It was good to be among like-minded colleagues such as AARP Michigan, MEJI, and the Disability Network. And we were fortunate enough to run into our friends at Michigan Health Endowment Fund, too.

Our Founder and dedicated Senior Advocate recently passed at the age of 96. Thank you Esther "Tess" Canja, for all the work you did for older adults across the country. You truly made the world a better, safer place.
