We at AAA Asphalt Paving, Inc. are saddened and remorseful to pass word of the recent passing of our longtime key team member and friend, Mr. Rayferd Colburn.?Rayferd joined AAA Asphalt 16 years ago in March of 2008 as General Superintendent.?Long before that Rayferd was born into the Asphalt business as it is what his father and family did.?He started his official career in the 1970’s with Walter A. Smith Construction as an Equipment Operator as a teenager.?Because of his mature nature, proven ability for good decision-making and leadership, he earned the position of Foreman at the young age of 23 years old; the youngest foreman in the company.?Upon the change of ownership from Walter A. Smith to Pedko Paving Rayferd was promoted to General Superintendent.?He also had a brief tenure at Batterson Striping as Superintendent before joining AAA Asphalt. Rayferd was instrumental in helping to build and maintain AAA Asphalt’s reputation and presence in the Houston area civil construction industry by setting the standards and insisting on good workmanship, high quality, and sustainable production.?He did all of that while providing safe work environments for his workers.?As a result, he built a very respectful reputation for himself.?It would be very challenging to find any person whether co-worker, customer, vendor, Inspector or Engineer who had something negative to say about the man.?Rayferd was passionate about his work, trustworthy, honest, and fair; but he wasn’t afraid to hand out an ass chewing when thoroughly deserved.?Through the years Rayferd directly touched the lives of hundreds of people through his leadership and mentoring.?There is no doubt that millions of people have enjoyed driving on roadways built by Rayferd and his crews. We will miss Rayferd and all of his experience, great stories, and contributions to our team and organization. There is a Visitation scheduled on Tuesday March 12th at 1:30pm with Funeral Services to follow at 2:30pm.?The services will be held at: Brookside Funeral Home 13747 Eastex Freeway Houston, TX 77039?
