Accelerating to Zero Coalition

With the conclusion of #COP29, it's clear there is still much progress to be made. For #roadtransport, we’re about halfway towards our Paris-aligned emissions targets. Analysis from The International Council on Clean Transportation estimates that current adopted policies, like ZEV regulations and greenhouse gas standards, avoid nearly?23 gigatons of CO2 between 2024 and 2050, and proposed policies, if implemented,?would avoid an additional 13. Commitments like the #ZEVDeclaration offer a framework for countries to align behind a single phase-out target, establishing a shared vision to catalyze an accelerated industry-wide shift. At a high-level event earlier today at #COP29, Costa Rica became the latest country to sign the ZEV Declaration —?pledging to ensure all sales of new cars and vans are 100% zero emission by 2040! Ministerio de Ambiente y Energía (MINAE), Gobierno de Costa Rica is known for its pioneering net-zero emissions plan and a leader in the green energy transition. This latest announcement signals their commitment to an emission-free road transport sector as well. “Costa Rica’s decarbonization challenge is to reduce emissions from the energy sector, which represents 65% of our total emissions, and the transport sector, which also has great opportunities for reduction,” says?Franz Tattenbach, minister for the environment and energy. “Therefore, signing the ZEV Declaration represents the building of alliances that will allow us to move towards an energy transition and the fulfilment of our National Decarbonization Plan.”

#TransportDay is well underway at #COP29 in Baku — this year focusing on accelerated transition to electric vehicles and the financial mechanisms to support emerging market countries. A new report from the Accelerating to Zero Coalition measures progress-to-date across the #roadtransport sector and how current adopted and proposed #ZEV policies align with the emissions reduction needed to achieve Paris Agreement targets by 2050 and limit warming to below 2° C – we’re about halfway there. On #TransportDay at #COP29Azerbaijan, we are pleased to announce the first Japanese ZEV Declaration signatory — Saitama City. As one of the largest cities in #Japan, this is a crucial step towards improving air quality in the urban area and also signals strong support for the future of e-mobility in the region. "Since assuming office as mayor of Saitama City, I have continued to implement policies promoting electric vehicles aimed at reducing harmful emissions. The city’s E-KIZUNA Project aims to make official vehicles zero-emission, and we are also working with private companies to convert waste vehicles to electric. In order to advance these initiatives, we have decided to sign the ZEV Declaration and I am very honored to be the first Japanese city to participate in this advanced initiative." - Hayato Shimizu, Mayor of Saitama City Mayor Shimizu announced the signature at an Urban 7 event during the first week of COP29 in Baku.

Two new signatories to the #ZEVDeclaration during #COP29. We welcome Zero Carbon Charge, a South African-based initiative looking to build a national network of green energy powered fast chargers, and the Norsk elbilforening (Norwegian EV Association), a member network actively working for the electrification of the transport sector for over 25 years.
