A2Z Drone Delivery

Ever since Jeff Bezos pulled off the marketing coup of the decade (at the very least!) by announcing Amazon Prime Air would *soon* be making drone deliveries way back in 2013, the actual promise of this technology has remained out of reach. I am not suggesting that all obstacles have now been overcome, but A2Z Drone Delivery, which I caught up with at Commercial UAV Expo, has been making steady progress over the past several years. Specifically, they have developed infrastructure that, to my eyes at least, could realistically achieve this long-held goal. The key innovation is that the drones take off and land from a platform 20 feet in the air that also serves as their charging base. Need to send a package? Just let the drone know and it will extend a tether down for you to safely connect, before hoisting it back up and flying away. The charging system has no moving parts (apart from the drone, of course), and the company reports that prototype systems have been deployed in the field for 18 months now and continue to function with little maintenance. Even the company's "drone in a box" solution only has two moving parts, being the clam shells that separate to launch and recover the aircraft. Another thing I like about this approach is it envisions drone delivery not as an offering from one specific company, but more like infrastructure: a roadway that anybody can use. Put one of these platforms up in a shopping center, for example, and any of the local businesses can use it, without having to bear the expense of building their own system. Now, there are still problems aplenty to be solved, including how this is going to be integrated into the airspace system, coming up with dead-bang reliable autonomous flight systems, and so forth... However, when drone delivery does eventually arrive (do you see what I did there? ??), I can't help but think it's going to look something like this... #drone #delivery #infrastructure
