A message from our Founder, Georgie Smith: Melissa and I, along with the Board of Directors and staff are very excited to announce the new appointment of ASOH’s first-ever successor CEO, Ken Grouf. I have served as ASOH’s CEO since inception. It has been the greatest honor of my life. As Founder, I am as deeply engaged as ever. I am moving into the role of President at this pivotal juncture in ASOH’s history, to work in partnership with Ken, to ensure that ASOH realizes its full potential, achieves optimal impact here in LA and scales to new regions. As a response to the LA fires, we moved swiftly to launch Home Bank LA (https://homebankla.org) to provide fully functioning and inspired home environments for our community members who lost everything in the fires. What we have created at Home Bank LA is now the second pillar of ASOH’s incredibly impactful work. Both ASOH’s original program for former foster youth and the work of HBLA are needed beyond the reach of LA. Our beautiful ASOH community has shaped an organization whose work is needed in many regions throughout America and throughout the world. I welcome Ken’s vast experience in scaling organizations. While Ken will work with me in scaling our model to new regions, he will also oversee the expansion of our work to support foster youth in LA and work closely with Rachel Stich, the LA Executive Director. Volunteers from Oaktree's Los Angeles office came together to sponsor, design and stage a beautiful new home for Chardone, a mother of two, who entered the foster care system at nine years old. In coordination with A Sense of Home, Oaktree staff worked over three days to ensure that Chardone's home would be a comfortable and stable place for Chardone to raise her children. A Sense of Home's mission is to prevent homelessness by creating first-ever homes and a community for youth aging out of foster care. A home that is safe and full of hope, dignity, and love is the first step to forging a successful life, and with ongoing access to resources and a caring community, each young person we serve has the ability to achieve their dreams and thrive. It’s a daunting task—especially when starting over in an unfurnished space. That’s where the nonprofit organization A Sense of Home steps in with their incredible new initiative: Home Bank LA. Home Bank LA provides fully furnished home kits, containing over 330 essential items, to wildfire survivors who’ve lost everything. These kits transform empty spaces into personalized, functioning homes at no cost to the recipients—offering them a much-needed sense of comfort and stability during this difficult time. What makes this initiative even more inspiring? The personalized touch. Kits are tailored to each family's preferences, with thoughtful details like their favorite colors and meaningful art. From furniture to first-aid supplies, every item is designed to help survivors feel at home again. Our hearts are breaking for the thousands of Los Angelenos who lost their homes and communities. At A Sense of Home, we intrinsically understand the power of home. We are working with businesses and organizations to connect those impacted with all that they need. ASOH Founders, Georgie Smith & Melissa Goddard, are collating lists of furnished and unfurnished leases. Please email Georgie via [email protected] for this list. Our Founders are also working with leaders to establish how we can harness our expertise to serve those effected by the fires.
