“Dating violence is more common than you may think, especially among teens and young adults: 1 in 3 U.S. teens will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from someone they’re in a relationship with before becoming adults. And nearly half (43%) of U.S. college women report experiencing violent or abusive dating behaviors. Each February, young adults and their loved ones nationwide raise awareness about teen dating violence through Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM). This annual, month-long effort focuses on advocacy and education to stop dating abuse before it starts.” -Love is Respect www.loveisrespect.org Learn tips to support your teen: https://lnkd.in/gPmGnVBP Learn tips to support students: https://lnkd.in/gdPx7c8u #teendatingviolenceawarenessmonth #tdvam #february #youthprevention #preventioneducation #asafeplacenantucket #nantucket #youareneveralone

At A Safe Place, we know that three little words can make a difference: “I believe you.” If you are a survivor in need of support, please know that A Safe Place is here for you 24-hours per day via our emergency hotline (508.228.2111) and Monday-Friday during office hours (8am-5pm). All of our services are 100% free and confidential. If you are not a survivor but rather someone who is looking to help create change in the world, please consider learning more about Start by Believing, a global campaign making strides in transforming how we respond to survivors when they disclose abuse. A Safe Place is proud to be one of the many organizations who are officially registered within this global movement for change. “I’m sorry this happened to you.” “I am here for you.” “It’s not your fault.” “I’m glad you told me. I am so proud of you.” These are just a few of the many simple things you can say to support a survivor who confides or reports abuse to you. How you first respond matters. It can make all the difference for the individual survivor as well as increase the shift to a better world where foundations of support replace stigmas, shaming, and the passing on of abuse cycles. Change starts one person at a time in one community at a time. It starts with each and every one of us. A Safe Place starts by believing. Thank you for believing too. This January marks the 21st year of National Stalking Awareness Month, which puts a spotlight on this often-overlooked form of crime. The Stalking Prevention, Awareness, & Resource Center (SPARC) defines stalking as “A pattern of behavior directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to fear for the person’s safety or the safety of others; or suffer substantial emotional distress.” “Stalking is its own crime with its own risks, safety planning needs, and legal responses. Research and practice show that victims are unlikely to use the words ‘stalking’ or ‘harassment’ when talking about their situation and may not know their experiences amount to stalking victimization; instead of asking victims if they are being stalked, it is best to ask victims specific questions about stalking behaviors (SPARC categorizes stalking behaviors into SLII strategies: Surveillance, Life Invasion, Intimidation, and Interference through sabotage or attack.) In addition, stalking behaviors are varied and may change over time, and most stalkers engage in multiple tactics to scare their victims. Victims respond to trauma differently, and may present as annoyed, frustrated, angry, or show no emotion at all rather than appearing scared.” -SPARC Learn more about identifying stalking behaviors here: https://lnkd.in/e6-xhjq5 #nationalstalkingawarenessmonth #stalking #january #sparc #asafeplacenantucket #nantucket #youareneveralone

Thank you to Nadine Burke Harris for having these conversations. #howtheworldchanges
I recently had the opportunity to join child behavior expert Bryan Post for a thoughtful conversation on how early adversity affects health and how we can foster healing. We discussed how experiences in childhood shape the brain and body in profound ways, often influencing behaviors and health outcomes throughout life. We also explored the importance of recognizing these patterns with compassion, building both trauma-informed AND trauma-responsive systems, leaning into our safe and supportive relationships, breaking cycles of stress to build resilience in kids and families, and the cost if we simply do nothing. It’s a conversation full of both science and hope, and I think it’s one worth sharing. If you’re interested, take a moment to listen and, as always, I’d love to hear your reflections. Following Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s expansion of physical therapy services by transitioning Manning Physical Therapy into its rehabilitation services department in July, A Safe Place is pleased to announce that we have acquired the Manning facility at 19 Amelia Drive. We will relocate from our current rental location on Windy Way this spring following renovations on the Amelia Drive building. A Safe Place has continued to serve the island in the capacity that we can, but with a 95% increase in services to survivors of domestic violence and a 52% increase in sexual assault cases over the past five years, we had been fast approaching a time when we were not going to be able to meet the needs of the growing Nantucket population. We are excited about the possibilities that now lie ahead for A Safe Place as we take ownership of our own building and a larger space. This opportunity brings stability and room for growth both within our organization and in our vital services to the Nantucket community. A capital campaign, led by Paula and Bernie Swain, has just begun. Manning Physical Therapy has noted that their physical therapy services have been successfully transitioned and integrated into the Nantucket Cottage Hospital and they are pleased with this outcome. We continue to thank our community for your support of our important mission. A Safe Place was one of thirty-two organizations who recently received grant funding from the Community Foundation for Nantucket's 2024 Nantucket Fund. This funding will go directly to our Trauma Therapy Program where approximately 40-50 local survivors will be able to focus on processing their trauma and healing. We are grateful to the Community Foundation for Nantucket (CFN) for helping us to create a healthier and safer society one ripple at a time. The Nantucket Fund is CFN’s unrestricted source providing grants within the local community to financially support the Island’s most critical needs and initiatives. #communityfoundationfornantucket #thenantucketfund #nantucket #asafeplacenantucket #ittakesavillage
