?? Black History Spotlight: Damu Smith – A Trailblazer for Environmental Justice ??? Did you know that one of the first African-American activists to fight environmental racism was born right here in St. Louis, Missouri? Damu Smith, born LeRoy Wesley Smith, later changed his name to reflect his mission: ?? Damu (Blood) – The sacrifice he was willing to make for his people ? Amiri (Leadership) – His unwavering commitment to justice ???? Imara (Strength) – The resilience he carried in the fight for equity From organizing Toxic Tours exposing pollution in Black communities to founding the National Black Environmental Justice Network, Damu dedicated his life to proving that economic development and environmental justice are not mutually exclusive. ????? His legacy lives on—not just in history books, but in the soil of North County. In his honor, A Red Circle proudly cultivates the Damu Smith Liberation Garden, a space dedicated to food justice, sustainability, and empowerment for our community. ???? Damu Smith was more than just a leader in the fight for environmental justice—he was family. He is the late uncle of A Red Circle’s founder, Erica Williams, and his commitment to justice continues through the work we do every day. Hi! I am partnering with A Red Circle, a nonprofit organization based in St. Louis, to raise funds as an initiative for the Go St. Louis Marathon this April. My goal is to raise $1,000 by April 26, 2025. A Red Circle promotes growth and development in local communities across North St. Louis County and beyond, focusing on education, and community wellness. Having worked with the organization, I’ve witnessed the meaningful changes and impactful initiatives they bring to the area. Initiatives Include: A Red Circle's SAFE (Student Avocates for Education) provides tutoring, mentoring, and connection to educational resources. "A Red Circle can: employ college students and trainees to support elementary students with resources, tutoring, and mentoring, provide more specialized services from professionals, support parents through the IEP process, and supply families with basic needs." Wellness programs such as a community garden and efforts to open a community grocery store in the near future. Today, St. Louis continues to face significant economic inequalities from past racist laws relating to redlining, and public policy. A Red Circle serves as a solution for creating a brighter future for the region we call home.
