Resilience is in Arnie Mascali’s DNA. In the shadow of Mt. Etna lies the Sicilian town of Mascali, inhabited for centuries by Arnie’s ancestors and relatives. In the aftermath of every eruption and earthquake that Mt. Etna hit them with, the survivors in his family regrouped and rebuilt. To this day, the town of Mascali still stands, resilient before the clouds of ash that threaten it. Arnie and his family needed every ounce of their inherited resilience for the morning of September 11, 2001, when Joe Mascali, Arnie’s oldest brother, raced toward the Twin Towers with his elite FDNY Rescue 5 unit. Joe and 11 other members of the unit made the ultimate sacrifice that fateful morning to save lives at the World Trade Center. After September 11, Arnie rededicated himself to his career in risk management, intent on honoring his family’s legacy of selflessness and resilience to improve more lives.
