A Glimmer of Hope

This year, Glimmer will begin transitioning from an international NGO to a direct grantmaker—building on the organization’s incredible work in Ethiopia since our founding in 2000. Glimmer’s founders envision this next stage as an evolution that will make their giving as simplified and direct as possible.?? ? Over the course of 2024, we will close our U.S. office and scale down our Ethiopia office while we also support a smooth transition. All donations to date will go toward completing our planned work in 2024. As we finish our current projects, we will begin investing directly in local initiatives with a focus on the humanitarian crisis in Tigray.? ? We are incredibly grateful for our staff, donors, and Ethiopian partners who have joined alongside us in creating lasting change for 25 years. This weekend we joined UN World Logic Day 2024. Our CEO, Alicyn Yarbrough, spoke on a panel discussing the future of the Sustainable Development Goals and shared how Glimmer is moving the needle on sustainable development in Ethiopia. Key Insights: ?? Climate resilience and gender transformation are key to reducing poverty and advancing the SDGs in rural Ethiopia. ? ?? The SDGs are interconnected. Our integrated community model embraces the synergistic impact of climate action, gender equity, and economic development. ? ?????? Women and girls are disproportionately impacted by climate change. We’re prioritizing regenerative agriculture training and resources that equip women farmers with the tools for financial resilience and climate adaptability. ? ?? Progress lies in collaboration and community-led development. We’re uniting a consortium of government leaders, local organizations, and community voices for an ecosystem that is aligned on strategy and primed for sustainable change.? ? ?? Glimmer is working towards a future where education is accessible and valued for all girls. In Ethiopia, nearly half of girls are forced to leave school early—meaning that far too many miss out on the vital knowledge, skills, and independence that come with a complete education. This perpetuates the cycle of poverty for generations. Girls' clubs light a path to empowerment for young women in rural Ethiopia. Student leaders like Zeinu and Derartu are leading the way.
