关于我们

A Book a Day is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization based in West Philadelphia. We engage the arts to expand literacy and promote interdisciplinary and life-long learning among children in underserved and diverse communities. Since our founding in 2014, we have distributed more than 6,000 books to young readers in West Philadelphia through donations to Lea and Penn Alexander public school libraries, community centers, and more. Our main goal is to support public education in urban settings and help students become independent and empowered citizens. A Book a Day is run by first-generation immigrant women passionate about using their higher education to further the fight for equal access to education for children. Our personal cultural experiences help us to better understand and serve the diverse community of West Philadelphia students. Every title we donate is carefully selected with an emphasis on elevating marginalized voices, reflecting the multicultural immigrant identities of our team.

Nonprofit organization A Book a Day (@pickabookaday) is working with Eri Mizukane, a Japanese-born and Philadelphia-based artist, to produce and distribute A Little Book of Onigiri. Part comic, part cookbook, this children’s book features original illustrations alongside an exploration of the history of rice in Japan and a reflection on food as cultural self-expression. A special limited first edition will be printed on Japanese mulberry paper and sewn using traditional Japanese stab binding. ABaD would like to collaborate with papermakers interested in creating sets of papers for the book covers — we’re particularly looking for paper that is inspired by or makes you think of nori or rice. To connect with us, and learn more about the project and compensation, please email [email protected]

While our grantees make a major impact on young lives throughout Philly, they often leave a lasting impression on our board members, too. Our VP Soyoung (So) Jung has developed a strong relationship with Sibylla Shekerdjiska-Benatova, founder of 2024 grantee A Book a Day, volunteering and tabling for the organization and even taking part in a brainstorming project with Sibylla and her family on ways youth can use art, like Philly's iconic murals, to understand social issues. We’re rooted in Philly, so we know there are hundreds of nonprofits striving to support youth in the city. Know that when you give a little to Spruce, nonprofits like ABAD get a lot.
