I have a theory. Once a paramedic finds themselves in a formal leadership role, they are removed from the front-line and into the office life. And while the relation to the front-line is strong at the beginning and we can understand what employees are feeling and practicing still, as time goes on and the more and more removed from the frontline, the less in touch, the less we truly understand the trials and challenges of employees. So I present the Paramedic Leader Dissociation Curve. The blue line is the typical progression, that with time connection and awareness to the frontline begins to dissipate. The red line represents the disconnect happening faster if the leadership roles do not engage, gather feedback and don’t continue their own competency. The green line represents the disconnect happening slower when there is engagement, feedback gathered and listened to, advisory staff positions and continued skill competency. What do you think?
