826 Boston is a nonprofit writing, tutoring, and publishing organization where students in grades K-12 and beyond can share their stories, amplify their voices, and develop as leaders in school and in life. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this understanding in mind, we provide drop-in tutoring, field trips, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of our free programs seek to strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

????We're still buzzing from the powerful spoken word event hosted by the Boston International Newcomers Academy (BINcA) Writers' Room, in collaboration with the school’s Black Student Union. It was an inspiring celebration of Black art, culture, and achievement in honor of #BlackHistoryMonth. "Academic recovery after the pandemic has stalled in the case of mathematics, and reading scores have hit a new low, as reported by the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Students in high-income districts have progressed much faster than those who come from low-income ones, widening gaps among groups of students." At #826Boston, we recognize the impact of these disparities in our communities, as mentioned in this Education Week article. Our high-dosage tutoring model is designed to address these very challenges. We pair trained tutors with students in our Writers' Rooms and Tutoring Center to ensure that every student receives the attention and resources they need to succeed—both in and outside the classroom. ?? VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT?? #826Boston is full of amazing volunteers. Today, we're thrilled to highlight Janely Rodriguez (she/her). Q: Tell us about yourself, Janely! A: I am a current student at Boston College and am studying applied psychology and human development. I hope to work in educational advocacy for students. Q: Why did you want to volunteer at 826 Boston? A: I learned about 826 Boston from one of my advisors after sharing how I wished I had been encouraged to continue writing when I was younger and expressing my desire to work with students to help them do just that. 826 Boston’s mission to encourage students to develop their writing talents and provide them with a safe space to express themselves spoke to me, as I believe students from my community could have greatly benefited from a program like this. ??
