After working through a less than ideal transition from the military, Bianca decided she wanted to control her own schedule and start her own company. Her company focuses on mothers and helping them with everything and anything having to do with being and becoming a mother. During the process of building her company, she participated in the Rosie Network and IVMF to help her get started. Bianca Bevans is an ambitious military veteran who is no stranger to adversity. After serving 13 years in the Navy, Bianca decided to focus on her career as an entrepreneur, offering postpartum wellness services to mothers and their families. Jose sits down with us to discuss his military transition during COVID and how he used his years of experience in public affairs to start his own company. Focused on researching with veterans instead of on veterans, VetREC helps bring crucial studies forward to help the veteran community better serve the community. Jeni Hunniecutt is a dedicated Veteran and scholar with a deep commitment to advancing Veteran-focused research. After serving in the Virginia Army National Guard from 2008 to 2014, she pursued a Ph.D. in Communication Studies, focusing her career on the intersection of Veteran identity, military transitions, and psychosocial health. Jeni is the Founder and CEO of VetREC (Veteran Research and Education Curation LLC), where she leads innovative projects that bridge research and practice to improve the well-being of Veterans. Her work continues to shape the field of Veteran Studies, driving forward community-engaged and Veteran-centric initiatives. Abbie Holland Schmit is a dedicated advocate for veterans and female warriors with extensive experience in service and empowerment. Starting her career in the Wisconsin National Guard at 17 and deploying to Iraq by 21, she overcame significant transitional challenges upon her return. Her advocacy journey includes roles as a non-clinical case manager for the Army's Wounded Warrior Program, Manager of Alumni at Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), and National Director of Programs and Partnerships at Dryhootch of America. She is now COO and Co-Owner of VetREC, a company that empowers Veteran Service Organizations and research institutions by helping them measure, analyze, and communicate their impact on veterans. After leaving the USMC I used my GI bill to put myself through school and received my Masters in Physical Therapy from SUNY Medical University in Syracuse New York 1999. I started my own healthcare consulting company 06/2005 and we are celebrating 19 years this year. Mike joins us to talk about his transition, his journey into higher education, and all the great things Villanova University is doing to support the veteran and military connected community. Mike talks about the importance of college and how it is so much more than just a degree. Listen in to learn about their veteran center on campus and the awesome resource it is for the students. You will hear the passion and love for the veteran community in everything Mike talks about during this interview. Michael Brown joined the Army after High School and served for 4 years on active duty. During his time in, deployed to Bosnia with the 1st Armored Division. Upon getting out of the military, he went to college at Northern Michigan University, majoring in Political Science and Applied Ethics. After graduation, he moved to Pennsylvania, and was hired by then Congressman-elect, Patrick Murphy, the first Iraq War Veteran ever elected to congress. He was his Military and Veterans Affairs Director, assisting with constituent services, veteran’s legislation, and a variety of other projects, including the revision and update of the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Michael then went on to be the Director of Veteran Services for Montgomery County Community College, before accepting a role at Villanova University. Michael was selected as the first Director of the Office of Veterans and Military Service Members at Villanova in October of 2018. Mike sits down with us to talk about his military transition and how networking led him to his second career. Mike talks about his journey from being a fighter pilot to giving back to the veteran community through volunteering. He talks at length about his volunteer efforts with Veterans Last Patrol and the value they are bringing to veterans at the end of their lives as they prepare for the final transition. Mike Ware is a retired Air Force fighter pilot and airline pilot. He is a published author and motivational speaker. Mike is an active volunteer serving as an ambassador for Veterans Last Patrol (Spartanburg, SC) and Forever Young Veterans (Collierville, TN) organizations. Additionally, Mike is a hospice volunteer in their Veteran-to-Veteran program. He and wife Suzanne have been married 47 years, have three children, and 10 grandchildren. Having served in the Air Force for 20 years as a jet mechanic, Chris brings a unique perspective and tenacity to his legal practice. His firm is committed to providing personalized and effective representation for veterans seeking VA disability benefits. In addition to his legal work, Chris is actively involved in systemic suicide advocacy, working to address and reduce suicide rates among servicemembers. Chris sits down to talk with us about his journey into law, starting his own law firm, and how he is using his experience to help veterans today.
