In 2024, the Women in Telecommunications and Research (WiTaR) is a 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) Working Group focused on promoting the participation and advancement of women in ICT. While the industry continues to innovate, the gender gap remains a significant barrier, with women representing less than 30% of the workforce globally—and even fewer in technical and leadership roles. ?? WiTaR has been tackling these challenges head-on: ?? Fostering inclusive workplace cultures ?? Driving mentorship and leadership development ?? Expanding access to STEM education By building gender-diverse teams, we unlock creativity, innovation, and economic potential for the ICT sector. Monday, as part of the ?? #WiTaR initiative to honour trailblazing women in #STEM, we’re shining a spotlight on Margaret Hamilton, a software engineer whose pioneering work made her one of the most influential figures in the history of computer science and space exploration! ?? ?? Margaret's Journey: Margaret Hamilton’s career in software engineering began when she joined NASA in the 1960s, where she played a key role in developing the software for the Apollo missions. ????? Her work ensured the Apollo spacecraft’s software was reliable, and she famously coined the term “software engineering” as a discipline! ?? ?? Groundbreaking Contributions: Hamilton led the Apollo 11 onboard flight software development, which played a pivotal role in landing Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon. ???? Her team’s success in ensuring the safety of these complex missions was critical, and her attention to detail prevented a major failure during the moon landing. ?? Honors & Achievements: ? In 2016, Margaret received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to space exploration. ? Her legacy continues through her work with the Hamilton Technologies, where she developed innovative systems for error detection and recovery. ??
