Sibling sexual abuse. Sibling incest. Sibling sexual trauma. Harmful sexualized behavior. Child-on-child sexual abuse. Maybe you don't even know what to call it yet. Maybe you didn't realize that brothers or sisters could do this to each other. 5WAVES is a collective voice promoting Worldwide Awareness, Voice, Education and Support around Sibling Sexual Trauma--child sexual abuse caused by a sibling. The founders of 5WAVES are five women in five different time zones, working to break through the dark shadows of a silent epidemic. As survivors and parents, they each found themselves utterly alone for years and even decades, as they faced the effects of sibling sexual trauma on their lives and families. Sibling sexual trauma is currently thought to be the most prevalent form of child sexual abuse both in the US and worldwide. Yet the stigma and silence surrounding it is so great that there is very little information or resources available to support those who are affected by it. The greatest tragedy is that this silence allows sibling sexual trauma to continue unabated. Since October 2021, 5WAVES has been volunteering time and donating resources to connect and collaborate worldwide to shatter the silence around sibling-caused sexual harm. They are working to ensure that others facing this multifaceted trauma will have access to support and know that they are not alone. These five women are creating waves of change, to bring sibling sexual trauma out of the shadows so people around the world can talk about it, heal from it, and prevent it. #SiblingsToo

What a wonderful and thoughtfully produced resource! Both the report and the service!
This week the NSPCC launch their new service to support families in which there has been sibling sexual abuse or harm. Coinciding with this is the publication of a research review and analysis I authored on this topic, which helped to guide the development of this service. ? The report looks at the prevalence of sibling sexual harm and abuse; the forms it can take and dynamics it may involve; factors that increase its risk; impacts on victims and wider family members; and why it can be so complex and challenging for professionals to make sense of and respond to. ? And drawing on promising approaches internationally, it delineates the bones of a whole family response grounded in the aims of healing, safety and justice. ? I am hoping it will be of use to anyone interested in learning more about this abuse and harm, and how we can effectively support all those impacted by it. ? Three more week's free access to read! The results described here are from a pioneering lived experience-research university partnership between Hebrew University and 5WAVES. We collaborated from concept, to survey development, to interpreting data, to writing results. There were pieces that only the expertise of university faculty could provide, and other pieces that only those with lived experience in the group to be studied could provide.
