If you haven't had the opportunity to read this memo from Craig Jelinek and Ron Vachris to their Costco Wholesale team yet, I encourage you to do so now! Why? They demonstrated genuine leadership (or, what Jocko Willink describes as Extreme Ownership) the other day with regard to their frontline workers unionizing in Norfolk, VA. Rather than blaming employees or railing against unionization, they looked INWARD to the senior management, executives, and themselves! They acknowledged that the employees' decision to unionize was a result of leadership failing to listen and act. This is NOT an easy thing to do...let alone write about to your entire company! There's a lot to unpack in the paragraphs - but the bottom line is, taking care of your employees should be the starting point for every leader. It would be a privilege to have a conversation with either of these gentlemen someday!
