It was super exciting to watch Jared Huston present the results of our first-in-human study at this year's Society for Neuroscience annual meeting. But honestly, it was just as exciting to see our work get picked up in the journal Nature Magazine! Shout out to Max Kozlov for writing this great piece!!
Proud to be featured in Nature for our Neural Tourniquet! The article highlights our collaboration with The Feinstein Institutes for our recent first in human hemostasis trial. Researchers are exploring a new method to reduce uncontrolled bleeding through electrical stimulation near the ear, a technique they call a "neural tourniquet." This approach enhances platelet activation by stimulating the spleen via the vagus nerve, which stores a large percentage of the body’s platelets. Early tests on pigs and mice showed significant reductions in blood loss and faster clotting. Preliminary human trials have indicated modest increases in clot stability, though the time required for platelet activation (about two hours) may limit its immediate applicability in emergency settings. A clinical trial is underway for testing the device for reducing menstrual bleeding through a clinical trial targeting women with type 1 von Willebrand disease, a condition associated with excessive menstrual bleeding. At Spark Biomedical, we are actively developing solutions for individuals with von Willebrand Disease and heavy menstrual bleeding through our subsidiary, 5 Liters. Our ongoing clinical trials at 5 Liters are dedicated to establishing the efficacy of neurostimulation in managing bleeding disorders, aiming to improve the quality of life for the 3 million+ women affected by VWD and heavy menstrual bleeding. Discover more about our groundbreaking work at www.fiveliters.com.
According to the CDC, "Von Willebrand disease (VWD) occurs with equal frequency among men and women, affecting up to 1% of the general population.1,2 However, women are more likely to experience symptoms of VWD because of the increased bleeding it causes during their menstrual periods, during pregnancy, and after childbirth. Between 2012 and 2016, more than 14,600 men, women, and children were seen at hemophilia treatment centers for the treatment of VWD. About 2/3 were women and girls."
