Michigan has the opportunity to grow crude iron and steel jobs by 60% and eliminate a major source of health-harming air pollution by upgrading the Dearborn Works integrated steel mill with clean energy, according to a?new report released today?by?5 Lakes Energy and authored by our own Dr. Elizabeth Boatman. The report, titled?"Dearborn Works: An Integrated Steel Mill Transition Study,"?lays out a plan for the state of Michigan to become a national leader in clean iron and steel by 2029, detailing how a joint investment of $1.57 billion from state and federal leaders, as well as Dearborn Works owner Cleveland-Cliffs, could replace the plant’s coal-fired blast furnace with state-of-the-art clean steelmaking technology.?https://lnkd.in/g--GdTvU

The state of Michigan is experiencing an economic resurgence, powered by the Biden-Harris administration’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Michigan now ranks among the top five for new clean energy projects and jobs, with a?recent report?revealing that the state has attracted 62 major projects, created 21,748 jobs, and secured over $26.6 billion in investments.

Here at 5 Lakes, we're excited to see the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) pledge of $1 BILLION in funding for Cleveland-Cliffs and SSAB #GreenSteel facilities, as well as funding for clean cement demonstration projects. Steel and cement are core to Michigan's economy, supporting our automotive and construction industries - but they're also our biggest industrial emitters of GHGs. The key to ushering these new emission-slashing technologies into our home state will also reside in continued investment in renewable energy, which is at the core of our work as a consulting firm specializing in clean-energy solutions.
