Hey, embedded developers, are you using DevOps to its full capacity in your workflow? This helpful graphic shows a few things: 1. DevOps is a complicated world with a potpourri of open-source and commercial toolsets to understand, configure, manage, and operate. 2. The hardtech and embedded product development communities get left out in two critical areas: ?? A complete build framework targeted at the embedded software workflow. ?? An automated test framework that handles devices (ie, hardware-in-the-loop). Discontinuous Delivery of firmware for embedded systems requires deeply rooted configuration management starting at the build itself. Your firmware is likely a line item on the parts list (like a resistor). Ideally, you'll want a build framework that wraps around the tools you already use (GCC, cmake, make, etc); keeps all of the library dependencies, commitIDs, and other metadata associated with the image(s) build; and packages all of this information under a single source of truth version id that can be added to the parts list/manifest/etc. Knowing this versionID, which can also be embedded into the image itself for forensic analysis later, allows you to know exactly what went into this build and how to recreate it later if you need to fix bugs or otherwise start there and move forward. Discontinuous Delivery also requires an emphasis on pre-release, end-to-end system testing on the hardware itself. You'll want an automated test framework that can provision and manage your DUT farm with HiL, push your test image to the correct devices in the lab, serve up the proper test content, and control all of the external equipment necessary to perform the testing and acquire the results.
