For 249 years, our illustrious Corps has fought in every clime and place, from the American Revolution to our most recent exploits in Iraq and Afghanistan.? ? Observing the fighting on Iwo Jima in February 1945, Secretary of the Navy James V. Forrestal turned to General “Howlin Mad” Smith, “The raising of that flag on Suribachi means a Marine Corps for the next 500 years.” Here we are 79 years later, thriving as a Corps of hungry meat-eaters, ready to dish out violence to those who dare cross the line and to help those who cannot help themselves. We will remain ready and relevant and maintain our standards, discipline, and warfighting excellence. Happy 249th Birthday, Marines!

The 4th MARDIV Marines supported the gathering and had the opportunity to connect with other WWII and Vietnam veterans during the 5th MARDIV reunion. The 5th Marine Division Association was established in 1949 by Gen. K. E. Rockey, Division Commander, to honor those who fought and died in the Battle of Iwo Jima and Vietnam. Its annual reunions have allowed these veterans and their families to reconnect and commemorate those who did not return. (U.S. Marine Corps Photo by Staff Sgt. Ryanne Williams)

Surprise 100th Birthday for WWII Marine and Peleliu Veteran Sgt. Ernie Ferguson Sgt. Ernie Ferguson celebrated a remarkable milestone—his 100th birthday—surrounded by family, friends, and fellow Marines on Sept. 14, 2024, at the Warhawk Museum in Nampa, Idaho. Sgt. Ferguson served with honor from 1943-1946 as a member of the 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He was part of the first wave of Marines who stormed the beaches of Peleliu on September 16, 1944, and later bravely fought in the Battle of Okinawa, where he was wounded in action. In recognition of his extraordinary service, Col. Michael D. McCarthy and Sgt. Maj. Christopher J. Adams, Assistant Division Commander and Sergeant Major of the 4th Marine Division, and Marines from Charlie Company, 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th MARDIV, Marine Forces Reserve, surprised Sgt. Ferguson at the celebration. Adding to the moment, General Smith, Commandant of the Marine Corps, sent a heartfelt letter of thanks to Sgt. Ferguson’s significant role in the Pacific Campaign during WWII. Sgt. Ferguson is a humble representative of the Greatest Generation—a man who, like so many others, answered the call of duty without expecting praise. His service and sacrifice, alongside those of his fellow Marines, helped shape the future of this Nation and set the enduring standards of honor, courage, and commitment that continue to guide the Marine Corps today.
