The first time I spoke with Charles Johnson I was awe-struck by his courage. After losing his wife during the birth of his son, he became one of the most effective forces in the effort to reform the American maternal health system -- which has, objectively -- become less safe and less affordable for the current generation of families compared to the previous one. Charles believes, as the t-shirt says, "Love Always Wins." And when it comes to fixing the system, Charles is a person who will never give up. Working together, we were able lift up community voices and pass national legislation, including the Preventing Maternal Deaths Act. Today I'm so proud to share that the nonprofits we've stewarded for over eight years, March for Moms and 4Kira4Moms, Inc. are combining forces to continue "applying pressure" (as Charles likes to say) in this next phase of advocacy and progress. I'm enormously grateful to Ginger Breedlove, PhD, CNM, FACNM, FAAN whose relentless energy and inclusive leadership formed the root of March for Moms -- and to our outstanding board Mary E. D'Alton, M.D. Chanel Porchia-Albert Dr. Jamila K. Taylor Gene Declercq Ebony Marcelle, DNP CNM FACNM Irogue Igbinosa, M.D Lastascia Coleman Elon Kotlar MD Angelina Spicer, our leaders past and present Katie Shea Barrett Laneceya Russ-Martin, MS Katie Breen, MPH Lewis Booth Elizabeth Kester, and our new leader Gabrielle "Gabby" Albert. Don't let the bleak headlines distract you. A world in which every person can grow their family with dignity is not only possible, but necessary.
