With news of its bankruptcy, there is no US or European other major lithium-ion cell maker to take over from Northvolt. Whilst true that 90% of start-ups fail, this one is the largest in years, some $13bln of lost funding, and follows smaller ones like SES AI, QuantumScape and Freyr. The industry is dominated by six Asian multinationals, from CATL, to LG Energy, Panasonic and overall Chinese companies make 65% of all lithium-ion batteries, in a cut-throat market with prices of $100 per kW/hr. Iron based batteries have dropped to $82 per kW/hr. With a 90% drop in prices of lithium-ion batteries between 2008 and 2023, and no end in sight to the continued reduction, we are in for a good expansion of renewable energy.
