?? Congrats to Principal Financial Group and ARS for the news about the new target date series using Lifetime Income Builder (starting with a passive with a hybrid investment version to follow). As we've said before, in-plan lifetime income is all about partnerships, a big change from the early stages of the market when Tamiko Toland wrote the report, "In-Plan Guarantees," in 2012 for Strategic Insight | ISS Market Intelligence. Principal is a recordkeeper, insurer, and asset manager, yet it doesn't need to do all these things all the time. "The majority of innovation" in lifetime income solutions is in the 401(k) space, Adrian Griggs of Pacific Life observed at the Alliance for Lifetime Income 2024 Protected Retirement Summit. Robert Powell, CFP?, RMA? moderated the panel of industry executives that included Nick Lane (Equitable), John Kennedy (Lincoln Financial), and Ken Mungan (Milliman). All these new ideas show a desire to fit different needs, but they also underscore the demand for more information and education, which is what the 401(k) Annuity Hub is all about. He added that the effort to add lifetime income to retirement plans is a partnership, not a solo venture, echoing comments from both formal and informal conversations throughout the event. We can already see that companies are looking for a range of dance partners to create a variety of products that suit different markets and needs. As this trend continues, plan fiduciaries will only have a greater need for help sorting through the options. We're working with Pacific Life and other providers to collect information to help grow this market and turn "income-curious" advisors into "income-confident" ones. Retirement security doesn't have to be a dumpster fire ?? to make it a top priority for public policy and for the industry to take action. Kudos to Andrew Biggs for this great piece in Forbes debunking many of the alarms around retirement sustainability. We believe that people want the option for lifetime income within their employer-sponsored retirement plans, but it's possible to work within the existing system without imagining we need to reinvent the whole enchilada. The Fisher anti-annuity stance can feed into negative stereotypes as retirement plan fiduciaries start to evaluate the field. Check out Michael Finke's excellent deconstruction published in ThinkAdvisor. Our take: ? First, the flatly anti-annuity position is fundamentally biased and flawed. ? Second, in-plan products and how they integrate into a plan are very different from the retail versions.
