Earlier this week captured the mesmerizing total solar eclipse! ?? 3P Lab UG member Austin Miller laser cut holes to print our lab name and Minnesota “M” that allowed us to observe the eclipse through tiny circular holes, creating an otherworldly experience. This natural astronomical phenomenon was a beautiful reminder of the wonders of science and nature. #SolarEclipse #LabLife #3plab #umn #Eclipse2024

Congratulations, Hayoung Jeong!
Educator & Researcher | Clean Energy, Decarbonization, Aviation, Space Engineering, Climate Action ??
?? Celebrating Student Success at The 3P Lab! I am happy to share that our resilient and dedicated master's student, Hayoung Jeong, at Plasma Power Propulsion Laboratory (3P Lab), has successfully defended her Master's thesis on the heat transfer and combustion characteristics of energetic nanoparticles!???Thanks to the committee members, Prof. Victor Barocas and Prof. Will Northrop. Hayoung's academic journey was not easy. She faced numerous personal challenges. Her journey at the University of Minnesota has been marked by hard work, resilience, and perseverance. Learning?thrives with the guidance of supporters and mentors. Binit Singh, my Ph.D. student, played a significant role in mentoring Hayoung, while my collaborator, Prof. Dilip Sundaram from IIT Gandhinagar, supported her in developing an analytical framework for the problem. Learning persists beyond the educational degree. Here's to a new chapter of endless learning and success! ?? Youngest Plasma Power Propulsion Laboratory (3P Lab) researcher, Yash Dagade, has been recognized as one of the top 300 scholars in the 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS) – the nation's oldest science research competition for high school students, for his innovative clean energy solution SkyWindFarm, extracting clean energy from high-altitude wind! ?? https://lnkd.in/gGEEhbwX Out of 2,162 participants, Yash, a 12th-grade student at Eden Prairie High School, stands out as one of the 3 students from Minnesota selected in the top 300. ?? Mentoring Yash has been a rewarding and learning experience. On numerous occasions, his unbridled enthusiasm and eagerness to explore high-risk ideas exceeded my pragmatic and vigilant research approach. At times, my grad students wondered why I let Yash test unconventional ideas, even when most failed. Publications and patents are in the pipeline. ?? Additionally, Yash also received the MIN-Corps MVP challenge award to develop a scaled prototype by the summer of 2024 before embarking on his undergraduate journey. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported Yash on his journey – my grad students Akash Dhotre, Binit Singh, and Daipayan Sen, Angel Mancebo from MSI for computational resources, Brett Rojeska from AAE for wind tunnel testing, and Ben Guengerich from Anderson Lab for 3D printed parts. ?? Your contributions have played a crucial role in bringing SkyWindFarm to fruition. I hope Yash makes it to the top 40. For now, let's take a moment to celebrate this remarkable achievement. ???? #RegeneronSTS #ScienceTalentSearch #Innovation #STEM #ProudMentor #SkyWindFarm

Exciting news from the?Plasma Power Propulsion Laboratory (3P Lab)! ?? Our PhD student,?Binit Singh, is making waves in propellant development with the innovative Laser-Induced Air Shock from Energetic Materials (LASEM) technique, featured in the Aerospace America magazine (AIAA) 2023 Year in Review. https://lnkd.in/gSidk9XA LASEM evaluates shock velocity by using a high-energy laser pulse on small solid fuel samples, offering a tailored approach to propellant development. Why does this matter? Nanoenergetic materials, crucial for propulsion, boast high energy density and faster burn rates compared to traditional propellants. Here's the scoop: 3P Lab is taking a physics-driven approach, tailoring nano-sized aluminum particle morphology (coating, size/shape, orientation) to unravel the multi-stage combustion dynamics. When hit with a high-energy laser pulse, these particles undergo a two-stage combustion process, influencing shock speed and allowing exploration of metal nanoparticle combustion nuances. What makes LASEM a game-changer? It provides a cost-effective way to test new propellant formulations using small samples, bypassing the need for expensive kilogram-sized testing during the initial material discovery period. Result? Significant savings in both cost and effort. Thanks to our collaborators, supporters, and advocates in this research endeavor! Stay tuned for upcoming scientific articles with interesting research results! ?? #ResearchHighlight?#Innovation?#PropellantDevelopment?#AIAAYearInReview #umnproud
