We just returned from Hawaii, where we were honored to host a media training aimed at improving coverage of traffic fatalities and serious injuries. This handout gives a good overview of some of the themes and problems we commonly see with traditional reporting. This style contributes to harm by normalizing these traumatic events and obscuring the wider societal responsibility to protect each other. Thanks to Ulupono Initiative for hosting us and sponsoring this work. And thanks to the amazing Hawaii media, who were so gracious about listening and thinking through the implications.
