I'm happy to announce that as of today October 10, 2024 International Medical 3D Printing and Extended Reality Day (a day I just made up) our Webster Foundation 3D Innovations Lab has released an update to our no-cost 3D viewer "Arc 3D Model Viewer." Version 1.1.0 now supports #3MF (Core Specification and limited Material and Properties Extension) and #glTF 3D datasets. This year's CDFAM - Computational Design Symposium in New York City was an amazing event, and special from many aspects. The 3MF Consortium is very proud to have released the public specification of the #Volumetric and #Implicit #Geometry extension to the #3MF file format. This is a milestone in #standardizing how volumetric data can be transferred between #CAD tools, #CAM tools, #Simulation tools and of course the downstream hardware. It not only means the handling of #part #instancing, #placement and #nesting on the build plate, but also manifold ways to #contain all the #metadata #information that make up professional #engineering #craftmanship. The geometric information is not built only on #voxel data, but also can mix and match those with properly function based #implicits with #indefinite #accuracy, plus interact with signed distance fields defined by #mesh data. But all this work would not be worth much without a broad ecosystem. While there are already announcement of support in several commercial implementations (like nTop, #EOSPrint, and #Autodesk #Fusion), this is just the beginning of a shift in what workflows will be possible in #Additive #Manufacturing. Our steering member EOS contributed one of their exciting research projects as an #Open #Source software under a fully commercially usuable BSD license. The 3MF Consortium is looking to promote the use of .3MF where, the file format has helped to enable your additive manufacturing workflow. Whether for mass customization where the small file size and metadata helps speed and track for high throughput, utilizing the beam lattice extension for highly complex parts, or the production extension, for communicating full build parameters along with parts and support structures. The 3MF Consortium are looking for feedback on what metadata we should author in as default into 3MF files. Fill out the very brief form to let us know what you would like to see the consortium of software developers including Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, PTC, Dassault Systèmes, Siemens, Autodesk, Altair. Materialise and Microsoft should enable in their applications. For those who do not know, 3MF can be used to communicate a part, assembly or entire 3D print build file, as well as extensions for materials, lattice beams, displacement, security and production. By adding additional metadata about the author, software, client, project, material, part number, ITAR restrictions etc. you (and ML) will be able to query, search, sort, use the data without referring to an external document such as excel, PDF, email, post it note, whatever.
