The other day I got my first IEEE SA award for helping with a new standard for securing medical devices that are IoT based. The standard is IEEE/UL Standard for Clinical Internet of Things (IoT) Data and Device Interoperability with TIPPSS--Trust, Identity, Privacy, Protection, Safety, and Security I took some time to create the foundation of this new standard and figured out attack vectors for various stuff. It was a blast to be part of. However, the team I worked with did a lot too. They are great. Here are a few examples of why TIPPSS matters: - Imagine a blood sugar monitor that sends your readings to your doctor. We need to be sure that the readings are accurate (trust), that the data is sent securely (security), and that your information is kept private (privacy). - A hospital uses an MRI machine that connects to the internet. We want to ensure that it cannot be hacked (security), and that it works correctly to provide accurate images (safety). - A medical app stores your health information. Laws about patient privacy define how secure that app needs to be. Essentially, this helps everyone involved in connected healthcare to make sure these devices are safe, secure, and trustworthy. TIPPSS applies to all classes of cleared or investigational medical devices.
