As a pioneer in extended reality for medical and surgical training, Professor Dhanda brings invaluable expertise to the board. Professor Dhanda is the CEO and founder of Virtual Reality in Medicine and Surgery (VRiMS) and has been at the forefront of XR-driven surgical education. VRiMS Surgical Society research group explores the potential of the 3D Organon VR ultrasound simulator for regional anaesthesia training! Led by Florence Chang and @Jason H., this study will compare VR-generated ultrasound images with real-world ultrasound scans across various blocks to assess its clinical utility. What makes this research so exciting? ? Dynamic, Interactive Learning – Anaesthetists can move a virtual reality probe over anatomical structures and see real-time changes in muscles, vessels, and tissue planes, mirroring the experience of using an actual ultrasound machine. ? Precision in Peripheral Nerve Blocks – By understanding ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia in a VR setting, clinicians can refine their technique before performing procedures on real patients. ? Impact on Global Healthcare – Regional anaesthesia is a cost-effective alternative to general anaesthesia, making it invaluable in low-to-middle-income countries where millions lack access to surgical care. Really looking forward to the findings of this study conducted by the VRiMS Surgical Society research group with Florence Chang and Jason H. leading the project. We will be using the 3D Organon VR ultrasound simulator for regional anaesthesia and comparing VR images to real world ultrasound images for a variety of blocks and evaluating its clinical utility. What’s really interesting is that it’s a dynamic training tool allowing anaesthetists to move a virtual reality probe over anatomical structures and see the changes in muscle, vessels with tissue planes in realtime, a featured used to precisely administer local anaesthesia for peripheral nerve blocks. Why does this interest me? Its utility in low to middle income countries where millions of people lack access to general anaesthesia and regional anaeshesia is a cheap and affective alternative to provide life saving procedures.
