The theme for 2025 is "Improve Our Support Systems" ??. As a part of Women's History Month, we are spotlighting women and events integral to the Disability Rights Movement. The San Francisco 504 Sit-In was primarily led by women, including two of the most important figures in the fight for equal rights for those with disabilities: Judy Heumann and Kitty Cone. On April 5, 1977, a group of people with disabilities staged a sit-in protest in San Francisco to demand greater accessibility and accommodations for people with disabilities. This historic protest became known as the "504 Sit-in". This protest ended up lasting 25 days and helped pave the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
