360 Scouting

?? This is the recent development we see the most in scouting departments at professional clubs: The introduction of ???????????? ??????????????????. ?????????? ???? ???????? Some years ago, all scouts basically had the same roles and responsibilities. If a player was flagged by data or offered by an agent, there was no one available to determine whether or not to have a senior scout evaluate him. As a consequence, even the best (senior) scouts wasted a lot of time on evaluating players who turned out to be poor. They spent time on that player by evaluating him on video, or even worse, they drove hundreds of kilometers to find out he has nowhere near the required level. ?????? ?????????? ?????????? Instead, you want your best scouts to focus as much of their time and energy on the players that are most interesting for your club. That's why more and more clubs distinguish two different roles in their scouting department. 1?? ??????????????????. They basically evaluate a high volume of players to simply cross out the unsuitable ones, and put forward the most interesting ones. 2?? ????????????. They evaluate less players per week, but go into more detail, and usually combine video analysis with live scouting. The screeners simply facilitate the scouts in spending their time as efficient as possible by doing very important pre-work. ???????? ???????????????? ???? ?????????????????? In the ideal world, clubs are able to find both their screeners and scouts themselves. In reality, most clubs don't have the time to do very extensive 'player screener scouting', and lack the knowledge on how to do that. Working with our screeners offers several advantages. *?? No company or club in the world spends so much time on the recruitment process of finding screeners as we do, which ensures a very high ?????????????? ??????????. *?? Our screeners are ?????????????????????? in using Wyscout to evaluate players very accurately and still keeping up the pace. *?? Unlike internal scouts, our screeners create a flexible shell offering the option to ?????????? ???? ???? ???????? during the season. ???????? ???? ?????????? ????????? Currently, we are testing 1.500 screeners. In about three weeks, the best ones will be ready to start working for professional clubs. While working with Arne Slot for several years, this is what I've learned from him. ?? ? After doing opposition analysis for him at AZ (2019, 2020) and Cambuur (2017), and interviewing him for football coaches magazine De Voetbaltrainer (2016), I got the chance to learn from someone who is currently considered as one of the best coaches in the world. This is what I've learned. 1?? ???????????????????? ???? ???????? are way more important than formations. Principles provide a lot of clarity to the players in ???????? to do, while still giving freedom ?????? they want to do that. One of his main principles: 'If the ball is on the wing, find a way to get back to the center'. That is the team's objective (what to achieve), whilst players have freedom in the way they do so (how to achieve that). 2?? Slot is obsessed with ???????? ???? ????????????. He sees it as a very effective way to create high-quality chances. He goes into a lot of detail for these runs, such as describing how many players should occupy certain zones depending on the location of the ball. He regularly talks about the importance of a ?????? ???? before a run in behind: starting a few meters in front of the offside line to already gain speed before the pass comes. 3?? ?????????? ?????????? are a great way to educate players about the game. Already back in 2016, together with colleague coach Marcel Keizer, Slot had built a big database with video footage of hundreds of football situations. If he wanted to show a player how to make a specific run in behind, or find space in between the lines, or defend in a 1v1 against a winger, he could easily show multiple clips of that football action, performed by top players. 4?? Slot sees the game of football as a continuous process of ???????????????? ????????????. Therefore, he constantly strives to positively influence the decision making of players. One example is adding a neutral player in small or medium sides training games such as 5v5 or 7v7. The players can no longer just mark their direct opponent, but continuously have to take split positions and make decisions. 5?? While he is not often associated with it, Slot focuses a lot on the ???????????????? of players. He puts a lot of emphasis on sprinting back as the ball gets past players and frequently praises the defensive work of forwards. For Slot, pressing is - even more than tactical aspects as ???????? to press and in ?????????? ?????????????????? to press - mostly about sprinting as much as possible.?
