I recently had the chance to catch up with 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben and ask him how he sees the anti-#climate, pro-fossil onslaught in the US and other countries. His take: The climate movement doesn't have the political power right now to win a face-off with the #fossilfuel industry. Instead we should grow our social power, by building on the clean energy momentum that is already growing globally. Bill cited 4 examples of how cheaper, healthier renewables are taking off with households and businesses around the world: 1. Die-hard red state #Texas installed more solar than any other US state last year, including 8 of the nation's 10 largest projects. 2. In a single year, #Pakistani consumers, fed up by unaffordable energy costs, installed rooftop solar equivalent to almost a third of the country's entire generating capacity. 3. Here in my home #SouthAfrica, solar grew by 350% in 2023 and continues to expand further as customers flee the state utlilty's high prices and frequent blackouts. 4. Solar and batteries will overtake #fossilgas this year as #Callifornia's largest source of energy. Social power is how we win, Bill thinks. By organizing more communities to make the switch to cheaper, healthier, locally-controlled renewables, we can drive out polluting, expensive corporate-controlled fossil energy. Anne Jellema, the executive director of 350.org, told the Guardian: “The US retreat from its global climate finance commitments is a staggering blow to the chances of keeping global temperature rise to 1.5C [above preindustrial levels]. By abruptly axing nearly a tenth of the limited funds for climate protection in developing countries, it is effectively abandoning millions of communities who have done nothing to cause global heating but who are losing homes, livelihoods and lives because of it.”

"Major polluters like the US have an obligation to support nations that are vulnerable to climate change, and the US exit from JETP sets a dangerous precedent, said Norly Mercado, Asia regional director at 350.org, a nonprofit that focuses on accelerating renewables development. “This should not be used as an excuse for developing nations such as Indonesia and Vietnam to delay their own commitments to phase out coal, and accelerate the shift to cleaner renewable energy sources..."

80% of people forced to leave their homes by extreme weather events are women, and yet Indigenous women protect 80% of the biodiversity hotspots we've got left. These contradictory stats help illustrate just how interconnected the fights for climate justice and women's rights really are. This International Women's Day, our Executive Director Anne Jellema shares powerful reflections on why the climate movement is so much stronger when we stand up for and invest in women and girls:

A week ago, foreign ministers met in Johannesburg and underscored the collective responsibility of the #G20 for the effective stewardship of the global economy, and the need to foster conditions for sustainable, resilient, and inclusive global growth. This week, G20 Finance Ministers are meeting in Cape Town under the theme of "Solidarity, Equity and Sustainability". However, in the midst a global cost of living crisis, many leaders seem to lack real solutions. Many believe that #FossilFuels are a path to economic prosperity. With the world teetering on the brink of climate chaos, G20 finance ministers meeting in South Africa need to reject the dangerous myth of shared fossil fuel wealth. If G20 leaders want to match the theme of this year’s meeting with action, the path is clear. They need to drop subsidies and investments in fossil fuels and put real and immediate money into renewable energy sources that work for all of us. Japan just released its climate action plan, and it falls extremely short. "Instead of heeding the people’s calls for a science-aligned 81% emissions reduction target, PM Ishiba bowed to pressure from fossil fuel interests," says 350.org Japan Campaigner Masayoshi Iyoda. 350.org Asia Regional Director Norly Grace Mercado adds: "Japan’s half-hearted emissions reduction commitments is an abdication of climate leadership that can derail the just energy transition in Asia."
