Celebrating 15 Years of Studio 310! Our team came together to celebrate 310 Day—the anniversary of our studio’s founding in March 2010. This year marks 15 years, and to commemorate this milestone, we stepped away from our desks to give back, volunteering at Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC to support our community. As we recently announced our rebrand, this anniversary also marks an evolution for us. Our transition from 310 Architecture + Interiors to Studio 310 reflects both our journey and our purpose. “Studio” represents our multidisciplinary expertise and commitment to limitless design, while “310” honors our roots, symbolizing our founding date. Stanley Augustus White was born in 1929 in the Duffyfield neighborhood of New Bern, NC. Among his many notable accomplishments, he was a founding member of the New Bern Giants semi-pro baseball team, a dedicated mentor to many young people in the community, and the athletic director of the Cedar Street Recreation Center. In honor of his legacy, the new Stanley A. White Recreation Center has been established to serve as a community hub for the residents of Duffyfield. Studio 310 had the honor of researching Mr. White's life and the history of the Duffyfield neighborhood to design and create a permanent exhibit—a nearly 60-foot history wall—located inside the recreation center. Inspired by the structure of a book, the installation is divided into conceptual chapters, each offering a manageable amount of content. This allows visitors to explore at their own pace, without feeling overwhelmed. A large, dimensional graphic of Stanley invites visitors to engage and take selfies, while informative panels, photographs, and dynamic collage imagery bring his story to life. The exhibition also features a display case of recreated artifacts, offering a tangible connection to the past. The arrangement of this dental office reflects the practice’s patient-focused mission and optimizes operational efficiency. Spaces for doctors and staff are flanked by patient treatment bays that accept natural light through frame views to the outside. Gardens and landscape on the exterior bring greenery to the foreground and shield pedestrian and vehicular traffic from view. Principal and Director of Design, Albert McDonald, AIA spoke to Track 3 M-Arch students at his alma mater North Carolina State University, on the role hand sketching plays in the design process.?He presented examples organized into the categories - Documenting, Problem Solving and Conveyance.? ? 1-??????Documenting- drawing existing buildings to better understand the designers’ intentions and the spirit of the architecture. 2-??????Problem Solving -?sketching as way to quickly generate ideas and solutions for design challenges. 3-??????Conveyance - creating depictions of a proposed designs to illustrate the anticipated look and feel of a place.

Congratulations to Gabrielle Schiltz, Designer for 310ai, and recent NC State College of Design graduate, for receiving a 2024 AIA North Carolina Student Design Award recognizing her contribution to the Spring 2024 DIY Cartography course taught by Professors Sara Queen (Associate Professor of Architecture) and Professor Tania Allen (Associate Professor of Art + Design). Gabby’s submission titled "Growth and Vulnerability: Measures of Social Vulnerability within Patterns of Redevelopment" supplemented the collective submission "Squeezed Out: Mapping Diverse Dimensions of Raleigh’s Housing Crisis". Submission excerpt: The following visual essays employ practices of critical cartography to better understand the many complex factors that have contributed to the current state of housing in Raleigh, the Triangle, North Carolina and US. A primary aim for this research is to ultimately create more equitable, effective and innovative design and planning approaches to the future of housing and urban development writ large. Towards supporting synthetic understanding of the factors hindering equity, this research examines historic and contemporary data specific to Raleigh NC, with the aim of offering key insights for other cities across the country.

In celebration of world architecture day, we are sharing a few examples of how we convey design ideas.?Using various formats and media (ex. renderings, sketching, diagrams, drawings and models) we transform ideas into clear depictions of how spaces, materials and context are organized. Good ideas mean very little if they cannot be clearly understood by our clients and community members, so we hone and experiment regularly to find the most appropriate approach for each project.
