As part of our work on the Catalyst Project, a community-engaged initiative designed to support the adoption of open science principles in under-served bioscientific research communities through the provision of reliable and sustainable cloud computing infrastructure, we’re developing a growing collection of “community partner highlights.” These are short blog posts, each highlighting the work of one of our community partners in Africa and Latin America. Predicting environmental impact of climate-related disasters relies on complex analysis using hundreds of petabytes of data. Today, earth scientists benefit from a strong understanding of open science and cloud-based data intensive computing, and we're here to help. At SciPY 2024, we co-developed a tutorial with MetaDocencia, to give earth scientists hands-on experience with reproducible workflows and the data products in the NASA Earthdata Cloud. It's been our pleasure working with the organizers to provide the hub infrastructure for the tutorial. The folks over at NASA PACE kept us on our toes during their hackweek earlier this month! Their machine-learning pipeline was used to detect cloud cover from new satellite data streams provided by the OCI, SPEXone and HARP2 instruments. We were able to unlock the full potential of GPUs in the cloud that were used to train convolutional neural networks by maximizing the shared memory available to PyTorch in a containerized environment. Not only did we resolve this for the CryoCloud hub, but we rolled this out to all of our hubs for all of our communities to benefit from. Read our blog post to find out more!
