The Illinois Supreme Court established the Commission on Professionalism under?Supreme Court Rule 799?to promote integrity, professionalism, and civility among the lawyers and judges of Illinois, to foster a commitment to the elimination of bias and divisiveness within the legal and judicial systems, and to ensure those systems provide equitable, effective, and efficient resolution of problems for the people of Illinois. The Commission achieves this mission through professional responsibility CLE, lawyer-to-lawyer mentoring, legal professionalism programming, educational resources, and more.

Today, on the first day of National Bullying Prevention Month, the Commission released data from our multifaceted study on workplace bullying in the Illinois legal profession. https://bit.ly/4dzX065 In the study, over 6,000 Illinois lawyers shared their experiences with bullying and discussed the impact it has had on them professionally and personally. This is believed to be one of the first wide-scale research projects conducted in the U.S. on this topic. The data underscore the importance of initiating much-needed discussions on bullying in the legal profession; discussions that often don’t regularly happen in legal workplaces. We invite you to read this report and share it with your colleagues, organizations and associations, and others who may benefit. It is our goal that the data and recommendations for addressing and preventing bullying will spur a culture change in your organization and the profession as a whole. Judge Victoria Pratt is taken the keynote stage at #ClioCon! Powerfully, she opens with a story of a bad day in her courtroom. That day a new court police officer interacted interacted with a man with known troubles making an appearance. In most courtrooms. a similar bad day ends in injury and jail time. Judge Pratt used the trust she had built up with both to de- escalate the confrontation. Procedural justice / procedural fairness is how she built that trust.

I am so proud of the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism's just released study titled “Bullying in the Legal Profession: A Study of Illinois Lawyers’ Experiences and Recommendations for Change." And I so?appreciate everyone who’s already read and shared this Study. The statistics and stories reported are sobering to read.?1 in 4 Illinois lawyers reported being bullied in just a one-year time period. ?During that same one-year period: - 38% of female lawyers in Illinois reported being bullied - 38% of lawyers with a disability in Illinois reported being bullied - 35% of Black lawyers in Illinois reported being bullied And 18% of Illinois lawyers said they had left a job practicing law because of bullying. In a foreward to the report, I share why this?issue is so important to me both personally and professionally. And I share the implications for the profession as a whole of allowing bullying to go unchecked. That more than 6,000 IL lawyers participated in the Study’s survey and focus groups gives me great hope that we may be at what author Malcolm Gladwell termed the tipping point for changing the culture of our profession together. #law #legalprofession #workplacebullying https://lnkd.in/gstXXBJc
